how much oil

Featured Replies

Just checked my oil level now im trying to work out how much oil it needs as the dipstick has max, a groove bit that goes in for about 3mm then a thick bit, then another groove same length as near the top then min mark now basically its down past the 3mm grove and is sitting near the top of the thick middle section of the dipstick.

cheers

As far as I know you should be OK so long as you stay between min and max ie, if I follow your decription correctly, anywhere in the c. 1.5cm between the two grooves. I think I'm right in saying that exceeding the max can damage the turbo if your car has one, amongst other things.

cheers, i rather keep it topped up as the engine runs better topped up than on minimuim.

There's a 1 liter difference between the minimum and the maximum sign. Use that as a guide.

Indeed I've read somewhere that it's better not to run the engine fully topped...

If you overfill it, say goodbye to your cat (not furry), dpf, etc etc

Manual says if at upper end, must not be topped up, if in middle may be topped up and if at bottom must be topped up. Yes there is a 1L difference from min to max, but not sure if it's linear eg if half way between then 0.5 L will get it to max.

My saleman told me that when the oil light comes on put in a litre. Otherwise leave the oil level alone.

I have to admit I do like to dip my stick. ;)

More of my c**p spelling

If you can't see the hatched section you don't need to top it up, but as stated above 1 litre from min to max.

A little bit more about the min to max thing....

I recently checked the oil level and it showed the mark 3/4 the way from min to max, so i thought i would top it up. Rather stupidly i put a full litre of the stuff in, that has move moved the marker on to the "x" in MAX.

Is this too much and should i get it drained by the deler? or should i be ok :o

Thanks everyone

Jus

Drain asap, especially if turbo.

Try getting a pella pump for about £20 from screwfix and pumping about 1/2 to 3/4 a litre out.

1 litre between max and min applies to all cars. Or a quart if it's old enough. :)

checked it this morning and it was between half and 2 thirds so i have since topped it up with quarter of a litre of shell helix oil as recommended on the bottle for vw and audi engines. this might also make the car think its service is now at 20k instead of 19k

Don't worry, I have just changed my oil and filter at 9000 miles with 7600 miles to go on the service indicator. The service interval has not changed after 4.5L of fresh oil, I don't think it is that clever!!

If it's fixed service interval, you reset it manually. The procedure I'm sure is here somewhere, or if anybody can get to Autodata before I do...
