E-bay bhp chips-Whats the crack?

Featured Replies

Hi all, before you ask, no, i havent bought one.

Today i have seen at least 5 of the things claiming to give your car the ' magical' extra 20+bhp gain.

Although on all of them is the same phrase " This is genuine and not like immitation competitors " or to that effect.

How can they get away with saying that cos they are all pointless and probabally restrict, kill your ecu. " will not invalidate warrenty and insurance "

Just wondered what your views are on these:thumbup:

i am a complete novice when it comes to cars... but even i wouldnt touch one of those

wow i didnt realise they were dangerous, i just thought it was a con, surely they should be outlawed then?

Its the stupid people that buy them that are dangerous. Can we outlaw them?

i actually think that we should try to harness the power of stupidity, and find a way to power our homes with it,think about it for a second,we would have a clean, renewable energy source which doesn't look like its going anywhere in a hurry:cool:

Oh and Andy, tell John to get some work done:P

I can tell he's skiving from here;)

Given that the 'expert' who wrote the guide claims they muck about with the inlet air temp (not mass air flow, then  ), when they actually work by affecting the inlet fuel signal to the ECU, I think that review can be treated with considerably less respect than the products themselves  - especially as the author says they're more than a resistor in a box, which they're not! :nono:

The 'chips' do work, and they do produce worthwhile performance gains. The downside is that newer ECUs will throw up a warning light as their programming will detect the 'incredible' fuel temperature signal (presumably by cross-checking against exterior air temp or some other parameter) and any engine will produce masses of soot, as the overfuelling that the chip causes occurs at all engine speeds. But they're not dangerous as such...

Now while I'll defend them from the point of view that they work (I can name one or two long-time members who've used them very successfully), I must say they generally appeal to a particular kind of driver, who like and2407 says are probably the things that need banning rather than the products themselves! :D

I share your 'novice' tag when it comes to cars and like you I wouldnt touch one either.:thumbdwn:

One thing to note is that a resistor mod / chip will only work on a diesel engine due to the lean burn. Anything that suggests the same is possible for a petrol is complete horsesh..

Google "evrymod" for more info.

It really worries me when i see these things cropping up. Its a fast track to having a broken car and or an empty wallet. My advise is stay well WELL clear of them!

i ran my fabia for 30k with a £20 resistor in a box noticable difference in power only down side is the engine management light was always on

£ for £ it cant be beaten

There is a tuning box DPT"Diesel Power Tuning" which was actually recommended by Tiff Needel. I see my local Peugeot main dealer are offering it. Believe it costs around £300 fitted. As I've already said I know nowt about cars but presume this one is the one to go for if you want a box add on rather than a remap?? Hope I'm not talking B****ks

No offence, but there's LOADS on here discussing each tuning method's respective merits. And you wouldn't want Mr T to get angry! ;):D

i'm gonna get one of these cheap mods, after reading the advert, i'm convinced you people are fools for knocking it.

i'll be the one who's laughing when my cars kicking out mega-power!

There are many different versions and levels of sophistication amongst these 'chips'. Many do just use a resistor to make the ECU think the inlet air temperature is colder than it is.

That's exactly what I mean: the author claims that the 'chips' have a lot more to them than just a resistor in a box, which patently isn't true (OK, so some might have a rheostat instead, but you know what I mean) And I haven't heard of any working on AIR temperature like he reckons, but plenty that work on FUEL temperature...

If these chips are so good, why are they so cheap. eg: 99p-£5

I dont know, and would pretend to know the long term effects on youre engine, but what i do know is I spent £20 on the chip, and I now get VASTLY better mpg.

I used to get 60mpg if i granny shifted, i now get 85mpg if i granny shift, and 65mpg if i drive normally.

(this isnt what the computer works out, this is me with a calculator)

This thing has saved me a huge amount of money, as I do alot of miles.

...maybe its doing some small damage, but I have had it on for 10,000miles now, and I have had the car checked over and no problems have been found.

I will keep it on for a few more weeks when I get a remap. Then that thing will be disposed of.

Also it does give me a fair bit more power... wouldnt like to say how much, but deff noticeable.

Thanks

Michael

Because they're just a 10p resistor / £1 rheostat in a box - put that way, they're actually a bit of a rip-off...

It will work, in that it will make the petrol engine run rich, cause bore wash and similar such nasties. Technically it will work, it will just knacker the engine quickly.

Ah, the days of manual chokes... :D
