Temp light at start up....

Featured Replies

Hi.This is from my hello thread.

As i said i`m looking at a Octavia VRS,the only thing is that when you start it cold the temp light shows red and it bleeps.

Looking through this site it looks like its nothing to worry about, just a dodgy sensor?

On test the temp gauge went halfway and stopped there, which i presume is the norm, and i`m pretty sure the level in the expansion tank was where it should be.

If i should walk away,i`m sure you guys will tell me,by the way its done 40k with full Skoda SH.

Thanks a lot and HELLO again..................

Sounds like a new bottle/sensor required mate, not particularly expensive or difficult to fix so I wouldn't let it put you off. Could use it as a bargaining tool though if the seller doesn't know any better ;)

Move'd to octy 1 forum for better response.

Thanks for response and moving the post.:D

I agree with Mr. BigW2069.

I have had 2 Octavia RS's and had the expansion tank (with integral level sensor) in both replaced under warranty.

  1. Check that the coil packs fitted are the most recent type.
  2. Find out if the timing belt has been changed (4 years or 60k miles). If you are buying from a dealer, get them to change it & the water pump, and hydraulic damper.
  3. Check that the central locking works properly on all doors, and that the LED in the drivers door does not light up when the car is unlocked, or stay on solid when the car is running with the doors closed. It can be expensive if there is a fault.

If the car feels legit apart from what you've mentioned above, then it sounds good.

Hi and welcome to you Stevrs08

currently have this problem on a 54 octy VRS. Only happens when engine is cold. but if I stop and start the engine after 20 minutes driving, it doesnt lit up again. So I would say nothing to worry about.

Check the door sills, water can get through there. check whether the panels and doors all line up correctly, to make sure it has not been damaged in some sort of cat A accident (and get yourself a written credit check and write-off report. If you are buying from a dealer, ask them whether they would be ready to supply you with this.) (they have a year contract so would cost them nothing).

Check when the cambelt has been replaced. as you will have to pay between 400 and £600 to avoid total damage to the engine if it hasn't been replaced on time

4 tyres= 400 - £500 so if they are not new, bloody well haggle :p

if you are still worried, and it's a dealer, get them to read out the fault memory and produce the read-out.

And carry on looking on this site for common faults and their costs.

Good Luck!

Thanks all,G-slave,does yours also bleep when the light comes on?

Seems like nothing to worry about, gave the car a good check over today and coolant level is OK.

Thanks all, you`ve put my mind at rest :thumbup::thumbup:

Lots of people have reported the coolant sensor problem. The bottle can be replaced but the easiest fix is to use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to scrape all the crud off the two metal prongs that protrude down into the tank. Worked for me and several others.

Do you have to remove the sensor so that no crud gets into the coolant:confused:

The sensor is moulded in place so it can't be removed but most of the "crud" is really just bubbles that came from the coolant in the first place. I asked the garage this and they said it didn't really matter.

Thanks for that Will.

Might just clean it tomorrow and see what happens.............

No worries. Let us know how you get on.

Well i took the expansion cap off today to see if the sensor prongs where covered in clart but they seemed clean.

Re-fitted the cap and checked the connections to the sensor,ie,removed and re-fitted plug and now the light on the dash illuminates at ignition and then extinguishes like you would expect if there was no fault.

Result or coincidence:confused::confused::thumbup::thumbup:

Result or coincidence

Dunno. You might have knocked it around enough to detach some of the bubbles or it might just be good luck. Or it might come on again tomorrow!!!

Well the temp light came on again today after i thought i`d sorted it.

This time it came on when the car was idling, before i left work, but was flashing wheras before it was solid red.

Is it the same fault-dodgy sensor or something new?As before once warm the light did`nt come on when the ignition was switched on.

Is the sensor in the expansion tank for temp or level?

TA folks

I think the sensor is for the level. You can see the coolant temperature on the dashboard - that's measured by a different sensor, sort of in the middle-top area of the engine. Do a search for "green temperature sensor" and you'll probably find it.

When my expansion tank sensor was playing up, the red light flashed.

Right then,i think i`ll get the expansion tank replaced, that should deffo sort it!!
