Infuriating SQUEAK Felicia (1999) 1.6 GLXi

Featured Replies

The car has developed a sqeak which is doubly annoying in that the car is running beautifully and has always been very quiet. It's just had an MOT and full service without problems. I asked about the squeak and the garage lubricated the throttle cable and repositioned the exhaust which was replaced a couple of months ago. It's still there.

The squeak is heard when lifting the foot on the gas and is most noticeable at below 30mph. It doesn't seem related to going over bumps or the clutch though of course it's there when changing gear. Pressing down on the accelerator doesn't produce a noise, but easing up on it does. It seems to come from around the centre line of the car forward of the gear lever but doesn't seem to relate to it.

Any ideas, please? I'd like to sell the Felicia in the near future but I don't think the squeak is a good selling point.

Is it a loud or quiet squeak? Try spraying WD40 around the top of the accelerator pedal. I had a small squeak developed with my clutch pedal and WD40 cured that. Also made the pedal feel a bit freer too.

Must be a car characteristic.

My clutch pedal squeaked (like Sweep off the Sooty show)

WD40 worked but it came back.

For a longer term solution WD40, clean the crap off the pedals and spray/spread grease. Mines not squeaked since

Only thing mine needs is that clunk when changing gear. Never happened until I got a new clutch.

Still love the car although the rusty wheel arches will need working on next year.

Good luck in selling yours when the time comes I don't want to part with mine just yet despite my Dads hints and car hunting in my presence.

A little squeak won't put buyers off tbh as long as the car is in good condition overall.

the rear brakes on mine squeek

I'd agree from what's been said; it's probably a dry pivot point on a pedal.

I'll see if I can find something to spray on the accelerator pedal. There's no noise when the car's stationary and the pedals are operated. If it's the pedal the sound must be travelling down the cable or something because it doesn't sound like it's coming directly from there.

there's a possibility it could be the rear engine mounting having a little squeek as the weight of the engine shifts back and forth

:)Probably the flexible exhaust joint between front exhaust/catalyst.

Try lubing around the gear lincage under the car, as these tend to squeek a bit when dry

I bought a can of WD-40 and as it's supposed to be safe on just about everything including rubber I sprayed it over anything that looked possible. It's hard to see much from ground level though. The result has been zero and if anything it's getting worse. The wife reckons that it's coming from the gear lever or something below in that region. The gear change is showing no problems. My description of the noise as a squeak is not adequate. It's more of a metal rubbing noise. "Wobbling and knocking" are the words the wife thinks are more accurate. Strangely, there were two mornings I didn't notice it on a short drive. They were both particularly cold and damp.

i hear a combination of squeaks/knocks coming from under my gear stick. my gear lever is like stirring soup but selects the gears with ease;) i was contemplating changing the bushes thats meant to cure the slappy stick and noises which i read in another thread

I don't know whether it's a triumph for WD-40, which has been frequently and liberally sprayed underneath, or whether something has at last stopped rubbing but the noise has practically disappeared. I do hate noises especially the sort that can't be pinned down. Thanks for all the asistance.

dude, lift you car, where the gear lever is, you'll see two rods, one is the one that changes the gear, the other one is the engine's its conected to the body so any little squeak or anything and it will be aplified by the metalic structure of the car, check there if DW-40 works, if it doe, the rubber bushin got dried out

I prefer brake fluid to WD-40 as a rubber bush lubricant, but that's a great expn of what causes bush creaks. Incidentally, they're usually worse in dry weather for the same reasons.
