VRS Vs TDi

Featured Replies

Guys,

Is there much difference between the 1.9 engine in the TDi compared to the VRS? TDi's seem to be a lot cheaper and I was wondering if it would be possible to mod one up to VRS performance.

Also, I'm guessing with a suspension upgrade and ARB kit it would handle well too? IE theres no real difference between the suspension system? Does the TDi have rear disk brakes?

Any info would be appreciated!

Mike.

I think Devonutopia's Fab is or was a Tdi and not a VRS, look at it now!!...............:thumbup:

I assume you mean the standard TDi...

Assuming both are PD injection systems.

This is a 105hp engine whereas the vRS is 130hp.

I would think that it's possible so long as the turbos would handle the remap etc.

Not sure about the rear brakes, depend on the output I would think?

devonutopia's has a vrs engine fitted iirc.

i'm sure you can chip the TDi to about 140bhp

If you want a vRS,buy one.

You get what you pay for.

The whole is greater that the sum of the parts.

I've owned two TDis and I really like them. But I'm sure lots of people would say the same about the vRS. Bizarrely, I think the rear disk brakes depend on trim level on a TDi. An 'Elegance' 1.9 TDi will definitely have rear disk brakes but I think the lower trim level (Comfort - later renamed to Ambiente) might have drums on the back. On the new model (2007 onwards), rear drums are standard unless you have optional ESP (cost cutting I assume). Many people on here have said it shouldn't make a big difference though as the front brakes do much more work then the rear ones. Of course rear disks look much nicer...

Edit: Of course if you're going to have a TDi and get it remapped, rear disks make more sense!

If MPG and comfort is more important to you, get the TDI.

If performance and image (still a skoda though) are get the VRS.

You'll regret TDI if you are a performance fan.

because the vRS is something special

just like the octavia the vRS is only a trim level.

other than having a PD130 engine, better seats, better brakes and stiffer suspension they are the same car. nothing special about it at all, might aswell have a sport badge or something.

different bumpers, exhaust tip lol

TDI = a bit lighter, 5 speed, pd100 engine, remaps to 140bhp as stock, will go to close to 200 with some serious modding

vRS = a bit lardier, 6 speed, pd130 engine, remaps to 175 as stock, will go way far if enough cash thrown at it.

Rear disks come on both (same brakes) MPG is not that much better in the TDI - perhaps talking 5 to 7 mpg better on average I imagine, mainly due to running on 14" wheels with narrower tyres. The long ratio 6 speed helps economy on the vRS on long runs, where the TDI is revving higher in 5th gear (a bit higher) Specs are fairly similar. Can argue an elegance TDI comes with more than a vRS does (heated seats, elec rear windows) vRS gets tarty bumper bits, umm can't think of anything else.

I have tasted both, so give me a shout if you need to know more.

Cheers for all the replies guys. I suppose what I was really wanting to know was if they have the same engine and turbo.

I can't really afford a vRS to be honest, but I wouldn't bother with the TDi unless I could get it to about 180bhp, and yes, I do realise it's all about the torque with a diesel, but the bhp gives you and idea of the power!

Its actually the 100PD unit in the TDi.AXR eng IIRC.

ATD is the 100PD usually used.

All 1.9 PDs have rear discs as far as I know.

Front brakes on the PD100 are FSIII so its a hub/bearing carrier swap if you want to upgrade the size.

I agree. Mine is 1.9 TDi 100HP ( remapped 120HP ) with rear discs.;)

The other thing to consider is this. Although the fabia vrs is a very nice car and it a great out of the tim car but if your even considering changing the suspension then why bother looking at the vrs? as your only going to end up with different bumpers and slightly less bhp/torque.

Personally if I was looking at a fabia for myself I think I would go for the elegance and mod that. SWMBO has a fabia vrs and it suits her driving style although I prefer a firmer ride than what the standard vrs gives so why not be a little different and create yourself a sleeper ;) . Remember, it's not just about the power if you can't use it and if the car doesn't handle as you want it to.

Getting a TDI to 180 will probably cost a lot, getting a vRS to 180ish is quite cheap, really.

You can't get a 1.4 vRS can you?

My work barge is a 55 plate Ambiente TDI 100.

Feels noticably less punchy that the vRS and ride so much better on narrower 14" rims.

Goes ok though, quite amusing! Was what made me decied to buy a vRS.

As said. MPG isn't much different - if anything mine is marginally better on fuel - maybe.

what about a 1.8T ambiente octavia? oh that doesn't exist either, get a life will you.

why deny it? a vRS is only a trim level just like the others in the range, all the cars are basically the same.

none of them are anything special, when companies actualy make something a bit special its things like the Focus RS, FORD Racing Puma, Escort Cosworth etc etc as they have a lot of model specific parts and not things like heated seats blah blah blah i mean things like a wider track, completely different suspension setup and in the case of the escort 4WD. This is what makes a care something special not a poxy badge and the engine out of a standard golf etc.

I believe the OP asked for opinions on the VRS's merits over the TDI 100, not a general rant about how car companies market "flagship" models.
