The M62 is a scary place... at 35mph!

Featured Replies

Hey there folks...

Went across to Blackburn today and did around 35mph all the way!

Absolutely all the other traffic was belting past and I didn't overtake a single thing.

On the hills I only managed 30mph too...

Oh by the way i should point out that I was in a sheddified old bus... lol

I was in a sheddified old bus... lol

please explain or post some pics

I thought the minimum legal speed on the motorway was 40mph :P

I came back from Liverpool on Monday along the M62 and managed about a maximum of 40mph, there was a couple of crashes, a Punto on fire and a huge truck that took up the inside two lanes which caused a massive tailback!

Meaning its like a shed.... so shed - i - fied... lol

I too thought the minimum was 40 but couldn't find it in writing anywhere last night.

Phil

That would be because there is no actual legal minimum speed on motorways (although certain classes of vehicles are banned).

I was told by the wombles that the slowest i could go was 40, if i go slower than that i should expect to be pulled over by the rozzers.

I think the wombles just say 40 so you're not going slow enough to pose a hazard.

Those huge cranes have a 40 top speed I think

Some slow moving vehicles are allowed depending what they are like wide loads provided they have an escort vehicle some even have Police escorts.

It also depends on the vehicle as heritage fleet buses prob max out at 40

Which is probably true, subject to you having a vehicle capable of going faster.

I've come across a number of cars doing 40 on recent motorway trips. All OAPs as far as I could see - presumably trying to save fuel given the current prices. It's alarming how fast you close in on them, and if this sort of thing becomes more popular then it's only going to add to the number of middle-lane wonders :(

Did the run again today but the busses we had today would do a steady 45... but mine managed 62mph going downhill! (taken off gps so its accurate!)

I was told by the wombles that the slowest i could go was 40, .

The wombles only say that so that cos they dont like overtaking anything slower than them. I personaly hate the ones local to me , as they sit at about 48mph, pi55ing of all us drivers in trucks when we have to overtake them. When some of the trucks i drive have their speed limiters set at 50 mph, it takes ages to get past, and on twintracks this pi55es of the drivers behind me

As if the North West needs any more morons driving at stupidly slow speeds on the motorways. Have just driven 20 miles around the M60, came by 4 people doing approx 50MPH, on a clear motorway, and guess what, all in the middle lane. If you can't at least keep us with a HGV get the funk off the motorway before you are responsible for somebody being killed.

M62 is also quite scary at midnight in December with no rear tyre

I agree about MLOCers, but the OP was driving an old bus that couldn't manage 55mph or so, and wasn't MLOCing.

I have a friend in the army, he was part of one of their convoys carrying tanks along the M25. Truck driver misjudged how slow they were going despite their flashing warning lights and escort vehicles, and ran into the back of them, truck driver died (bled to death at the scene).

I came around a corner on the M5 in Birmingham doing 70MPH one night, to find a numptie doing 25-30 MPH in the outside lane, it is lethal and stupid.

There is no place on the motorway for anything so slow it cannot do at least 55MPH, unless it has a proper escort with warning vehicles. Motorways are fast roads, a kingpin of their safety is the relatively similar speeds vehicles should be travelling at. If the vehicle cannot achieve motorway cruising speed then use the A roads.

As said above... we weren't using the middle lane at all.. stayed in the inside lane the whole way... If people are too stupid to not look ahead of them and be able to judge what another vehicle is doing in from of them... they're the ones that shouldn't be on the motorway!!!!

So you'd rather these large slow loads block up A roads where it can be much harder to safely pass them?
