Trying to flat beam my Xenons

Featured Replies

Tonight I have tried to follow Maters guide to changing the UK std beams in accordance with Eu regs for my trip down to the south of France for me jollies!

Thank God I did a dry run now and did not discover this on the Chunnel!

I have Xenon headlights on my 4 month old car and I have noticed some differences in comparison to Maters guide . For starters the back of the headlight unit is secured with two torx screws now as well as the metal clips.

Now may be I am being really stupid, but the back of the light unit looks very different. I am aware that the tutorial does not detail Xenons in the pictures.

Can someone please tell me how I get the OSRAM Xenarc unit off the back of the bulb as detailed in the picture below or even if I should be doing this at all???

Thanks

thanks SMS - i'll pm him

Good news is the OSRAM Xenarc unit doesn't need to come off. Also, as you've found out, the Xenon unit has two torx screws on the back of the light to hold the extra electronic gubbins required for the Xenons.

Ok, here is a bit of additional info.

Xenon headlights have a couple of Torx screws holding the electronics for the Xenons in place.

These need to be removed. The rest of the procedure is the same as Maters guide, the pictures below will hopefully help you find the adjustment lever. The drivers side is the hardest as it is hidden and you have to feed the screwdriver through a small hole, as below.

The passenger side is much easier as you can see the lever you need to move

As always, anything you do to your car using this guide is at your own risk. I can not, nor can Briskoda, be held liable if anything goes wrong.

Drive with the beams on all the time, they won't notice the direction of the dips.

It's not like the frogs bother changing the beam pattern when they come over here (or Poles or Latvians which live here and still drive their deathtraps).

WTF have you been drinking at that time of day?

The problem is, the penalties in mainland europe are much tougher than here and the fines are on the spot, meaning if you cant pay then you either escorted to a cash machine or your car is confiscated. Yes the europeans seem to get away with it here, but being stuck on holiday with either no car or money is not fun. The french in particular take a hard line, and british cars tend to be targeted, because we are the ones most likely to be flouting various regulations that are against french law.

Flat beaming the light, once you know how to do it, takes less than 10 mins per side. Having done mine several times I have it down to about 3 mins per side.

not at all, it annoys me that people have the atitude we wont do it till they do it. when i thought we were a leading country and set example (we will align our lights if the frogs dont)!!

apd007: Thanks for your help all sorted now! I took the drivers side off first, hence the little panic at all this gubbins that did not look like the tutorial photo!

Once I got the passenger side off, I was much happier.

I am quite comfortable with doing this now while on the Chunnel.

I am not taking any chances with the Frenchies. Every time I have stepped off a ferry I have been interrogated and one of those times was on a damn push bike!

There is a good chance I will be driving at night anyway. Plus I have little ones on board - late night pharmacy trips and the like!
