Octavia TDI Lack of power

Recommended Posts

Hi we have an 02 TDI octavia, every now and then it just looses power, we've been advised to change the air flow meter, it made no difference, you can start the car drive off and all is fine, 10 minutes into the trip, try and pass another car and theres no power, almost like the turbo's been turned off and it won't gain the power back until the car it switced off and restarted, then theres full power until it decides to loose power again, any advise would be appreciated.

That sounds just like my Superb 130PD, over 3 years ago, the dealer took weeks to get it sorted (12 weeks in garage I think), I got rid since it was the 3rd major problem I'd had with the car.

If the engine problem hadn't happend I'd probably still have the Superb now.

Current car (Saab) is a bit heavy on the juice so I'm considering another Skoda, maybe another Superb  - well I thought the car itself was brilliant, dealer no so.

How many miles has it done?......

Official answer is a new turbo. However, they can be cleaned- someone in 'member services' offers this as a service.

The MAF (airflow meter) doesn't cause this sort of problem: I would agree it's probably sticky vanes, but you should check the N75 and the vacuum pipes to the VNT actuator too. If fact, you might get an improvement just by working the vanes back and forward.

have a look here:

Does it seem like there is less turbo lag when setting off? I noticed this when mine had the stuck vanes.

Turboturbot - it can be quite intermittant, mine would go a couple of weeks without doing it. With this problem is seems to go into limp mode at 3,000+rpm so it only tends to be when you welly it. There are two fault codes which are indicative of stuck turbo vanes, just can't remember what they are. Given the number of people it's happened to it's more likely to be the turbo than a sensor fault, but you never know.
