Hazard Perception

Featured Replies

Am adding minibuses to my licence. Cat D1

Done the theory OK but missed out by 16 marks on the HP (got 51 and needed 67)

Just a bit annoyed.

Has anyone done the HP and what did you think of it?

Ah did you not have to do it for your driving test?

I think the test is a bit stupid to be honest, and I cannot imagine anyone could ever get 100% on it (unless they had actually devised the scoring). I think the best approach is to get one or two hazard perception CD roms. Sometimes you might see a hazard develop, but the actual test doesn't score you on it if you click the once. You can't click repeatedly, but you can click a few times - so it's best to click when you first see the hazard, and a bit later on if perhaps something changes, and click again in maybe a few seconds if the potential hazard is still there but not yet gone away.

I am sure this is also discussed in-depth at 2Pass.co.uk • Index page

I did find it a bit stupid as you think F*** the other guy should have stopped and things.

But its not a case of who is at fault unfortunatly.

No I didn't have to do it as part of my test as I passed my test back in 2000.

I did one for my class C having not done one originally and scraped through by the skin on my teeth. I found it rubbish and speaking to the instructors they said a lot of people have trouble with them.

I never did HP, but did have a practise when my Mum got the regular car test CD rom. I thought it was dumb as I spotted stuff before the max mark on the test, so never clicked thinking it had already logged it. It actually seemed as if you shouldn't click until the hazard is nearly upon you.

Mum did OK at least.

got hazzard peception disks here, do pretty well with them and we have to do them once a year at work, however the work one is timed so you only have about 3 seconds to find the hazzards after you have read what or how many you got to find. you also loose marks of you click the wrong thing.

I did my D1 HP test a couple of years back, got 100 % in the theory, but I know what you mean about the HP section, it's very random. I just ended up clicking on everything that was moving and seemed to score OK.

I was planning on doing my bike test, but the HP has put me off it, as i have been driving for so long now, i know that i will spot the hazzard long before the software wants me to spot it.

It's not about what is written in the highway code it's about what it safe and what is right for the situation, there is sometimes a massive difference.

I found the multiple choice bits harder than the hazard perception section tbh.

I had no idea why I had to learn some of that stuff in the D1 category just to drive a minibus with a long wheelbase; questions about how many dings of the bell by your conductor means there is an emergency onboard etc?!!?!?. The categorisation of vehicles needs an overhaul in my opinion.

I know someone who works for one of the companies that developed the software, and he reported that the biggest problem they had in s/w testing was the number of experienced drivers who got rubbish scores because they anticipated, rather than letting a hazardous situation develop.

HP should be a video and you point and click as you got through it i reckon, much more safe as you can see the hazzard evolving.

Key thing to the test is that you click for developing hazards and ignore the potential ones. I did mine as part of the ADI qualification. According to the test office guys, the more experienced drivers do poorly as they tend to click on the potential hazards, but then not click when the potential hazard starts to develop. He also noted that the youngsters that come in before they have ever driven score consistently the highest marks. Sort of proof it it where needed that as an assessment of hazrd perception it is very flawed indeed.

I generally advise pupils to click once when they see a potential hazard, then twice more in fairly quick succession if it starts to develop.

I am just about to start my reading for my cat D1 and for me it will be the first time I have done hazzard perception. I have the books and DVDs so I guess I will have to see.

My worry is I have been trained to advance level, and high speed driving etc and worried that I too will see potential hazards and start to report them to the old computer a bit early. Having spoken to our driver training guru his best advice was go through the dvd and start to guage what you think they want out of you and tune yourself to it according to what they want for the purpose of the hazzard perception test.

I will have a play soon and report back!

Yeah Chris, as per my previous, this problem was detected when the s/w was being tested. I also know some human factors guys who reckon that the test as constituted encourages "driving up to the hazard then reacting", rather than anticipating the hazard by "easing off when you first perceive it".

This is certainly my recollection from helping SWMBO with hers (she's only been driving a couple of years) Although seeing how much later she (as the driver) sees hazards than me (as the passenger), I really don't know what good it's done...

That is exactly how I see it working with students. It tunes them to ignore the potential hazards. I am personally in favour of dropping the hazard awareness test from all driver training myself.

Chris

It does somewhat make a mockery of it. When people have to train themselves to react in the way that the computer requires them to rather than the way you would in the real world. Still i guess that is somewhat true of all tests and exams. Give them what they want to know not what they should need to know.

I'm in the process of motorbike training and I'm going to have to do this soon. Best get swotting!!

get rid of hazzard perception and get the learners doing commentry driving as part of their test.

that's bloody hard work as well in my experience!!!

This thread has made me feel old.

I have D1 on my licence!
