Today I went to Duxford Air Museum

Featured Replies

Today I went over to Duxford with my brother and his little'uns and had a great time.

Armed with my trusty N95 phone, I managed to get some good pictures.

It was a good day out, but Duxford is expensive to get into. At least the weather was better than the last time I was there for a Briskoda Meet.

One more.

Images have been resized to 1024x768, but still look pretty good. I have lots more photos as does my brother who used his 300D.

Great shots Manny - good ol' N95 :D

How much was it to get in, out of interest? Must make the trip sometime. SWMBO works for IWM so at least it'll be a cheap day out ;)

Cheers,

Steve

Adults £16 , and children free. Parking is free, as is the onsite transport.

Nice pic of the SR71.

Want to take nephew to an airshow, but the prices take the ****! £15 kids, £30 adults!

Nice one. At least you got to see a Vulcan. :)

My father loves it here. - Very nice pictures :D

I've always fancied going to Duxford. Do they do aerial displays an that?

Went to Cosford Air Museum last year at a slightly cheaper price......free....

They had a Vulcan and a spectaular cold War exhibition. a must see if you've got a day to spare and nothing to do.

I remember that meet! Was easily the wettest Brisky meet ever!

Indeed, I now know 4 that still exist.

The one now flying again,

The one sat sitting at southend airfield looking in a sorry state,

This one at Duxford,

and the one Bernard just mentioned.

My brother took a lot of pictures of the SR71, which despite being in that building for nearly 10 years is still leaking oil.

There was also a B17, but its just to big to get a picture of, especially with all the other planes in the same building.

I used to drive past there every day when I worked in Cambridge. When they moved their Concorde out onto the tarmac it almost caused pile ups on the M11 roundabout!

Nice pics, Manny. Bet you wished you'd taken a camera with a nice wide angle lense!

SR71 - awesome, awesome aircraft. It's been moved in that time - used to be the first craft after the entry, but now re-located the American exhibits.

Probably still leaking because it's still cooling down and the seams are still shrinking - when cold on the ground, it's got bodywork gaps all over and leaks profusely from the fuel tanks too.......scary.

Glad to see they've got some engines there with it now - didn't have last time I saw it.

Shame they've crowded the Vulcan.

They had an F15 in prep a few year back - is it on display now?

Same for a Russian HiND chopper.......

i can think of some others, 1 at RAF Waddington and I recall one at Blackpool airport when i was a kid AND the all white one at the RAF Musem at Hendon

There are a lot of planes in the newly rebuilt hanger, but looking back at the pictures from the brisky meet there seems to be a lot less planes than in the old one.

I dont know a lot about choppers, there are some on display though.

IIRC the have an Apache there - longbow?

Don't know about that. They did have a Hind attack helicopter in West German markings last time I was there.

On the cost point; I see where people are coming from, but the last time I was at Duxford, I spent all day there (pretty much literally).

Ref the SR-71 leaking huge quantities of fuel on the ground, that's partly a myth according to the sled drivers themselves. They took off on part tanks, because that made handling during take off, climb out, and any possible aborts, much easier and safer.

At Easter there, the Hind was in bits, being repainted.

Generally, ref the US hall, I think it's architecturally spectacular, but too darn small, like it was shrink-wrapped around the BUFF.
