What colour should a speed camera van be?

Featured Replies

I'm just very qureus here as to what colour a speed camera van should be.

Saw one on the M6 near Carlilse the other day on a bridge above the motor way and it was yellow. I've only ever seen them in white before.

Are they Yellow in England and White in Scotland? Thats the first van I have seen south of the border so not sure myself.

I think it depends on what the SCP (Saftey Camera Partnership) can get a good deal on.

I've seen several different colours, also dont forget it (may) not be a speed enforcement van, it may be ANPR.

I'm not sure there are any specific rules on the colour of speed camera vans. I've seen white, yellow and silver ones.

In Wales they've been known to install speed cameras in the back of horse boxes, which isn't really playing the game IMHO :thumbdwn:

There maybe some rules governing scamera vans working under the Safety Camera Partnerships though.

There is no legal requirement for them to be any particular colour

Ah. I see. Just wondered having never seen any other than white.

You will probably find it is historic from the time when a lot of police vehicles were white as they got a better price on them, in my area i think we only have 1 vehicle left that is white, the rest are either silver or unmarked and various colours now.

Ah I just always thought white was the only colour they used for marked vechicles. Never relised that it depended on costs and that.

Pretty much all silver my way now with a bit of Red occasionally for the Diplomatic Protection Group ;)

I like the bottom too. Never seen a police car like those on the roads. Do you get then out and about?

That will be a promtion vehicle for the met me thinks, got to admit the camera van on the M6 from a distance looked like a AA van, it just so happended having been down the M6 a few times in the month I noticed some cameras I had never seen before on one of the bridges and the next one up had the van so I put two and two together.

Unfortunatly they are promotional vehicles, and are never used for operational purposes...

Speed camera van should should be bright yellow, sign written with "We are cynical robbing B@$t@^&S" along the sign in huge letters.

What do you mean "unfortunately" - as a tax payer, I'd be somewhat p***ed off to see the rozers driving Lambos, it's bad enough they get X5's to smooth out the worst of the unmaintained roads around here!!

:iagree:

North wales police are using a trailer horsebox (blue/aluminium) towed by a brown range rover

I know, how very dare they catch people breaking the rules...

:D

no particular color, but should be (as per acpo guidelines) easy to spot with markings on it. but as its guidelines, its just that!!

What colour should they be? Rust, with sooty streaks, and no windows! ;)

It's not that, it's the way the speed camera partnerships claim to be doing this in the name of safety. They aren't, they cause accidents by their very prescence inducing panic. Mostly money raising QUANGO's.

:iagree:

I've seen people, who were already comfortably within the ruling speed limit, braking hard for a BT van (which I'd seen from half a mile away) just because the engineer was wearing a yellow traffic coat.

I also wondered if the police get commission on every motorist they catch speeding?

I thought, from what I have read on police sites, that they have to be highly visible, that the copper has to be visible too (ie in high vis jacket) or there has to be a warning sign on said stretch of road saying speed cameras?

I've only ever seen vans in a luminous yellow/gree. Quite a funky colour actually lol. I have also see a copper on a bike in a side road pointing a gun down the road, and one with the car parked round the corner and the camera on a tripod (all black).

all monies goes to the treasury, speed camera partnerships get a cut to fund their money grabbing, but i beleive now it has to go towards speed indication devices and road humps.
