Turning Fog Lamps into Sidelights...Possible..???

Featured Replies

...........How many times do you use your fog lights, Scenic Drivers need not anwser, so I was thinking " Can you turn them into side lights " like the Mini has or are they too low to the ground, would they be legal. I've noticed the new Forg Galaxy ( I think ) has Sidelights/Fogs in the same unit. I reckon they'ed look cool........

Well you would have to find some way of fitting 5w sidelight bulbs into them.

a similar thread was on here a few weeks ago, on vag com there is away of doing it but i couldnt get it to work when i tried. according to something i found on a search you need to put in extra bulbs, but i dont think the fog light could take it, maybe some leds?

In theory yes, but you're only allowed 5W bulbs, and I think strictly speaking only 2 of them.

So what was the old 'dim dip' about, then? I thought that was done by running a low current through the main / dipped beam lamps...

Yes, but then they weren't sidelights.

For the OP, i really don't think there's any point to this, even on an Octy, never mind with the low set lights on a Furbie, but if you can find a dim-dip unit with wiring instructions, you could do it that way, and still retain the fogs for the few days a year when they're useful.

Right you are - you can see the sidelight bulb in the main beam reflector! :o

And well, you gave me an idea about how to do what the OP wanted without actually losing functionality.

dim dip relays all the way :D

Sounds like a great idea, but would that just attract mr police officer and MOT man?

i think plod would argue that a fog light is aligned to be a fog light and not a side light. there is a way with vagcom to lower/brighten the brightness (lower and up the volts) but not tried it (its in the longcode bit) so i guess there is room to play with this if someone wanted to have a go.
