Xenons - Self levelling going "mental"

Featured Replies

Right, lets see if I understand this correctly .....

The height of the Xenons is adjusted electronically rather than mechanically, yes?

Mine are too low and I have asked the dealers to look at it but, as the problem only shows up during the hours of darkness, I suspect I may need to learn how to do this adjustment myself.

Where EXACTLY can I find out how to do this adjustment?

have you got vag com? if you have find a slight (very slight) slope and face down it without handbrake (thus the slight slope) and do a reset as mentioned somewhere on the first page of this thread by me. when you then park on level road turn off the car, take keys out, restart car and put lights on and they should be a bit lower.

i know it says to park on level ground to do it all, but ive found you can also use slopes to your advantage if level ground has made no difference.

If no suitable slope, just drive the rears over two pieces of board.

with no nails, god we sound a dodgy bunch, no expensive garage equipment needed with us lot about

I just adjust my xenons manually. One screw does Left - Right and the other up and down. The result is that I choose where they are, and not some dealer's machine telling me where I should have them!

in theory once theyve been set up on the car you shouldnt need to fiddle with screws on bolts as the lights will know what is level and what is not (thus the sensors).

My thoughts exactly. Worst case you can break the adjusting motor when doing the beam adjustment in improper way.

Basically you have to drive the beams to their neutral position before doing ANY kind of mechanical adjustment. This way the automatic adjustment "learns" the new up/down limits.

But in reality, I've never heard that anyone has actually broken their automatic adjustment when doing the mechanical adjustment without this "beam neutralization" process.

im more worried that someone thinks they are adjusting the height when in fact they are messing with the focus/alignment instead and ends up blinding someone as the light is more focused on one spot.

I'll have a better read of all this thread this evening and make the necessary adjustments (if it's not pouring rain as usual) and I'll see from there.

I'll post what I did and how it went once I get it sorted.

I didn't think going uphill or downhill wouldn't make any difference because the sensors only measure movement in the suspension not if the car is actually level ie : weight in the back or heavy braking etc. But i suppose the car might lean down flat out up a hill...

Second visit to the dealer today was a bit more constructive.

Fault diagnosed as faulty headlight motors, being replaced under warranty.

Fingers crossed when I get the car back this'll be it sorted!

Got the car back today. Haven't had a chance to drive in the dark yet, though I am heading north tonight with a full car so that should be a good test.

For info - they replaced the rear "sender" on the rear axle too.

mine done too, will check in the dark tonight. one headlight was higher than the other and have now been set to correct height. certainly doesnt look any different on the garage door to what it was before i took it in.
