Oil for my Felicia

Featured Replies

Hi my beloved felicia 1.9 diesel has now done 236000 kms, Could anyone please give me some guidance as to what oil i should now give her, taking into account parts that maybe worn, and also which may help with compression & fuel economy.

SO moly liquid, synthetic, 15w 40 or another type. Please i want to keep her in peak form for the coming winter.

regards to you all. Maryann.

You'll probably find that there's a range of viscosity quoted in the owner's manual or maintenance manual. On that age I'd go for a premium mineral oil at the high end of the hot viscosity range. With the quoted 15W40 example the hot viscosity is the 40.

If you really want to find out about oils, search for posts by the user "oilman".

THanks for that. i will find oilman.

According to the Haynes manual under the lubricants and fluids section it states for the diesel engine:

Multigarde engine oil, viscosity SAE 10W/40, 15W/40, or 15W/50, to API CD, VW 500 00, or VW 505 00.

Hope that was of use to you, seemed a bit random to me.

Which goes to show just how out of date Haynes is; API SM for petrol and CJ for diesel engines are/were the 2007 API standards.

oil quality is more important than oil grade for old engines, most peaple increase the viscosity due to wear but in reality the best way to judge if you need a thicker oil is sound, if engine vibrates or runs louder then you do need a thicker viscosity, if it sounds good, alls good,

For an older engine I wouldn't go above a semi synthetic, fully synthetic although the right temp range will make your engine sound really rattly its something to do with the polymer chains in the oil and how much they compress before separating or so i've been told. A good old fav. is castrol gtx used this for years and never had a problem:thumbup:
