New 1.9d owner....me like....me like very much

My L reg astra finally has to go to the crusher in the sky. she was a thirsty old gal, needed 3 new tyres, windscreen, clutch was on the way out and the zorst was hanging off. so I was roaming around the autotrader wilderness for a new motor getting more and more peed off with shonky overpriced small cars.

I finally settled on an x reg felly 1.9 diesel (cos it was close and was a grand) :) . She has 107k miles on her :eek::eek::eek::eek: but has full skody service with cambelt at 58k but seems to run fine. I have ordered some parts from jorily to sort the sloppy gear lever and warm start prob (after reading this forum - thanks guys) and after half a tank of the black stuff she seems to be returning 60 to the gallon (240 miles....is this OK?). I'm trying to keep the revs around the 2k mark, is this best for fuel economy?????.

sorry for all the questions but just worried in case i have bought a lemon.

Dave

Hi and welcome.

Hope you enjoy the Felicia - I loved mine, great cars.I'd consider getting the cambelt done again in the next 5-10k though to be on the safe side.

sloppy gear lever is fairly normal, but it is quite fiddly to change the parts in the gear linkage, i will be due another cambelt change in the not too distant future too

edit: beaten to it..... what he said:)

hmmm, cam belt, doable at home? (bearing in mind I have stripped and rebuilt a zzr1100 gearbox in my time).

A ZZR1100 is easy, a cam belt will be a p!ss over :)

should be easy then, change the tensioner as well at the same time

anything else to watch out for on the 1.9 diesels????

Keep you fuel cap locked :)

Other than that, you should not have too many problems :)

Cam belt is due soonish; fuel consumption is fine.

Fuel Cap is the least of your worries unless someone drills the tank.

107k miles? on a diesel? Should be run in nicely.

My Petrol Felly has 110,000, returns decent economy and drives rather nicely even though she has a slightly loose gearstick. But its in a lot better state han my uncles Corsa even though his is a younger car with less miles.

You might want to treat her to injector cleaner. Stick it in your tank, fill up with diesel and then it should marginally improve things.

My Felly sounded smoother and improved economy marginally aftereards.

I bought some cleaner before I topped up. I'm hoping to sort the gearstick this weekend if my parts arrive. I'm amazed at the build quality and solidity of the car, I expected "baked bean can" panels and shoddy welding (been brainwashed i suppose) but she feels really solid. its a good job there arent any performance options for the diesel otherwise i'd be sorely tempted....... :) shiny syndrome!!!

Where are you? Feather Diesel will tune anything that runs on God's intended fuel!

The only weak point really is the rear arches. The metal there is quite thin and slightly more prone to rust through. Tailgates also seem prone to a bit of rust too.

I'm in East Sussex, I have noticed a bit of bubbling on the tailgate but as its a workhorse i'm not going to fret :)

If you are getting 60 mpg, i would be extatic, our las only got about 40 mpg when she had hers, unless on a good run with me driving , then it would do about 50

Watch out for corrosion in the front and rear spring cups, as these have let one or two of us down over the years
