Looking at purchasing an octavia

Featured Replies

That said, it would be a very good base for a remap - just ask the Furby boys

not that the OP is too worried about the performance side of things really.

It would be a good starting place for tinkering indeed

I think the op called the MG a fugly car and from a dead manufacturer and not the vrs (would certainly make more sense to me). Having had a mk1 vrs I can not see how a 130pd would keep up (especially considering the way the vrs gives it power is similar to a diesel anyway -all in a lump as the turbo kicks in).

You could even strike lucky and find a higher mileage 2003/4 130PD in your price range - and then no standard octy VRS will be getting away from you in a hurry on public roads!

If only I had known, I'd not have bought my vRS. No wonder all the taxi drivers round here look so happy, they've all got bloomin fast cars.

Felicia get a Felicia!!!!

:D

Octys are nice cars. I would have got one myself but plumped for a Felicia and its still rather nice and who needs luxuries like leccy windows and A/C.:P

The Octy did really well in the JD power surveys compared to its' VW sister the Golf IV.

Pick wisely.

Just reading through the thread you seem to have made your mind up on a 1.6 petrol car that seems to have your desired kit levels. After all not everyone wants a VRS

Make sure you test drive and check things work, RAC vehicle check and Welcome to Club Skoda.

Lol, this has gone a long way!

1) Regarding the fugly / dead manufacturer remarks - I meant the MG ZT. Certainly not Skoda!

2) I drive a diesel vehicle at work at the moment...it's awfull. It's supposedly got 130ps (mondeo) but I don't like the way the power is delivered in a diesel, and I cant stand the clatter at low revs. Petrol FTW.

3) I'm not looking for a cheap Audi. I just want something well-built, reasonably specced and comfortable for the motorway.

Also thanks to robmawer - cheers for actually answering my questions!

Sounds sensible enough to me.

I bought my Felly on the assumption that it was a budget VW but its still majorly Skoda as its a revamped Favorit and not a Polo. The Fabia and Octavia used a VW chassis.

I wanted

You seem to be doing things in a logical order research before buying (I did mine the other way around LOL)

The MGZT? Looks aggressive verging on boy-racer but they have been known to not be reliable, I prefer the 75 as that looks serene but again you have to look hard for a good one plus they have been known not to be reliable!!!!

Yeah, the vag reliability side of things pushed me to first look at skodas.

Yeah, I learned about research the hard way before too :D

If i were you price up a 4x4 1.8t as the insurance will be a little friendlier than a vrs.

I was going to say I wanted a car that was decent and comfortable. The Felly was around when I was learning to drive and back in 2000 when i went looking round at cars I thought they were nice and reminded me of the Mk2 Golf. and 6 years later I bought one.

I seem to be a tad off topic :D

Just to encourage you, there are quite a few older MK1 Octavias around here (some pre facelift), all look in good nick and aren't pouring smoke out of the exhausts.

Same here, I had a headgasket go on my last car (Rover ) so I thought about Skoda or Seat as I wanted something reliable but didn't want to pay VW or Audi prices.

Lol, I know of a garage who used to include a HG change in a major service, if any K engines came in :D

I know you said no to a diesel but the PD130's don't clatter that much (or maybe I'm used to it :) )

Shameless plug http://briskoda.net/skodas-sale/mk1-octavia-pd130-elegance-estate/120979/ I currently do just over 60miles per day to work and back and usually get 45-48mpg. It's a great car, quick when you want it to be and laid back the rest of the time. I'm looking for around £4k as the mods are coming off.

Last time I bought 1years road tax it was £110 I think it's gone upto £120 now so it's still quite cheap and the insurance is also quite cheap too.
