PC to LCD TV

Featured Replies

Having bought a new PC the old unit is going down stairs to become a jukebox!!

My question is how to connect the PC to the LCD TV.

PC has standard monitor output.

LCD TV has HDMI, SCART, S-Video, (S-video Y,W,R) and a bunch of other inputs

So what lead to I need to view Windows on my telly?

a VGA to HDMI adapter and a VGA cable?

What outputs does the PC have, does it have DVI. If your pc has DVI then a simple DVI to HDMI cable will do the job.

You may find your TV has the correct VGA input, in that case just get the appropriate lead.

VGA to HDMI wont work, VGA is analogue and HDMI is digital and totally incompatible.

so it's impossible to convert between analogue and digital signals?

I'm using a VGA to VGA but unfortunately this means the sound. isn't carried to the TV. Would need a separate audio lead.

I think you just need a double ended RS232 cable.

Not impossible, but the hardware needed is expensive and would need to be a VGA to a video convertor and then digital from that to HDMI, adding approx £100 to the bill.

PC has the following outputs. poor pic quality

Its the blue plug on the left you need to connect to the TV

As before, VGA male (PC end) to VGA (check male/female connection on tv) and you'll need an audio lead input into the tv if you want the sound to come out of that instead of/as well as a speaker setup.

I'm a computer numpty and its something I managed so there's hope for everyone :)

Get a £10 graphics card with DVI and a DVI-> HDMI lead?

silly question following the previous analogue/digital post put can a DVI -> HDMI cable carry an analogue audio signal into the tv's HDMI connection?

Or does that connection need a separate audio cable like VGA to VGA?

No you still need separate sound, but at least you have the digital image quality.

As for GFX cards I think I've got a GeForce 4MX kicking around you can have for postage + a pint or :

FX5200 128MB : Novatech GeForce FX5200 128MB 8XAGP Graphics Card TV Out : nVidia AGP Gr : NOV-FX2128 (AGP & £18)

or

dabs.com - Gigabyte Radeon X1550 128MB DDR2 PCIE DVI-I TVO 450/800MHz (GV-RX155128D-RH) (PCIe)

The adapter:

One of these, not sure which one:

Scan Computers UK: Labgear DVI to HDMI Adaptor

Scan Computers UK: Labgear HDMI to DVI Adaptor D Plug - Supports 1080P - 24Ct Gold

VGA Monitor Cables Male to Female > Maplin

Also do male to male and female to female connections.

Ouch that's expensive - cheaper from PC suppliers and if the PC is next to the TV then a short one would do. FWIW I paid £7 for a 5m long Vivanco cable. 1.8m is £3!

God that makes Maplins very expensive

Luckly My TV had DVI connectivity, and came with an adaptor.

When I was looking for an LCD telly I wanted a Toshiba one with a VGA input knowing thats all my computer had as an output. SWMBO preferred the Philips that didn't have VGA... but the guy at PC World assured me that you could get a VGA to HDMI cable similar to the DVI to HDMI they were using on a demo PC to TV setup...

That was rubbish of course! ...as said above. So got an old graphics card off a friend and with DVI out and the appropriate cable for a few quid off ebay and I was sorted. (She obviously got her way about which TV we got :))

The only problem depending on age of wuter and card is (or at least I'm having) is finding a resolution that can be seen clearly and comfortably from the correct distance with a 32" TV - i.e. from the Sofa! You might have to play around with resizing the icons and font aswell as the main resolution to find something that works.

PS - only went to PC World cos they price match websites where as Currys wouldn't.

PPS - the TV was smashed on one corner too when we got it out of the box!

PC World Only price compares to other expensive web sites like Dell, HP and the like, but if you go to websites like Microdirect.co.uk is the UK leading retailer of quality computer components and electronics., Computer Supplies and PC Components from Novatech, wwwamazone.co.uk ou can pick some bargains also on eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace I have bought a few PC bits on the cheap.

But I have built a media PC out of some spare bits I had left over from my upgrading my gaming rig. I also connected it to my Phillips LCD TV 32" with a DVI to HDMI cable. This widescreen TV tends to work best at its native res of 1360x768 all the others make text unreadable.

But you can get DVI to VGA adaptors as my monitor on my gaming rig uses it. Still using my 15" LCD I had for 5 years.

My PC downstairs has DVI and a DVI in to the TV which works great. My laptop however in to the tv upstairs wont work! I've tried DVI to composite for the pic and get sod all....grr!

Good luck though, I love having the PC downstairs for music, iPlayer etc. and putting the photos on a screen saver means we look at them more than we would with the passing of photo albums!

I use VGA to VGA on my Samsung Series 5 32" would use a digital signal but my laptop only has VGA, sound isnt an issue as it works well with the surround sound

This thread is two months old chaps ;)

Rob, I guess you're sorted out now?
