Got satnav?

Featured Replies

Back to the OP (but enjoyed getting this far )

I ran a Maplins extension from the cigarette lighter under the centre console, up into the glovebox and fixed the outlet there. Once happy that it worked, I cut the plug off the lead and joined the lead to the power supply to the c lighter socket. Centre contact goes to black and white, side contact goes to brown. The small cradle for the sat-nav is fixed to the glove box lid. Easy to use and not obvious from outside the car that it is for a sat-nav. Saves the problem of *****s who see a sucker mark on the windscreen and break in to see if you've left it in the glove compartment and no trailing wire as it just lies inside the glovebox.

I have had both an I would go for Tom Tom over Garmin any day

What the F is a pikey satnav?!

a cheapo satnav that claims to do everything a proper one(tomtom/garmin etc) do but for half the price, then turns out it doesn't.

Navman, Novmin, NavGo, ShizNav, CheapGo, etc

Got the missus a Garmin Nuvi for her birthday, wheras I'm running TomTom on my phone with built in GPS.

The Garmin is great for her as it's simple and a bit cartoonish, letting you choose what car icon you have etc and with massive buttons. But I wouldn't stray from TomTom personally - it has way more bells and whistles and you can configure more options. Also I prefer the mapping and the way it's presented on TomTom.

Wouldn't dare buy anything else though - with something like this that's costing you over £100, you don't mess about IMO. You stick to the TomToms and Garmins.

Both my last two sat navs (ViaMichelin on a PDA and now a Tesco-special Becker) have been fitted to Jerry-built dash mounts comprising the OEM bracket and the prongs off a mobile phone cradle. The cable then runs along the side of the driver's seat, around the position lever, and up to the sat nav, so doesn't really make too much of a mess...

Yeah I know - got TomTom 7 on my phone - just not got round to changing the icon yet. :D

It can also do corrections to maps as you go, so if it thinks you're in a field when you're actually on the newer stretch of A1M / A19 Selby bypass then you can fix it. :D

Never realised v7 Navigator was available.... I have v6 on my N95 8gb working with the internal GPS.

Talking of the A1 & TomToms......

The latest v810 tomtom maps are actually more up to date than the actual roads!!!! The A1 has had the roundabouts taken out south of Doncaster down towards Newark and the maps show the new motorway style junctions..... Even at East Markham which isn't even finished yet and is still a building site!!!!

I reckon that's the only time i'll ever have the TomTom being too up to date!!! :D

Got my TomTom one Xl running Navcore 8.201, with WaCE v8.10 map, not that difficult if you know where to look, it thinks its an x40 device, which arent even out yet.

Can't get my 520 to run 8.201 so have gone back to 8.051..... I've tried everything but 8.201 just reboots the device as it starts up.

Even tried another working back-up of 8.201 from another 520 but still no joy on mine.
