Got satnav?

Featured Replies

Today i bought myself a satnav and an issue cropped up... the lead for the power was too short to reach the windscreen due to the positioning of the 12v socket.... came up with a solution....i found the underside if the central console is smooth enough for a suction mount

I don't have an issue with my cable length, but I thinks it's a flaw in the design that I must trail my cable across the cabin, being irritatingly close to the gearstick and handbreak before reaching the same 12v socket every other car manufacturer on the planet locates in the centre console.

I have a tom tom one XL and the cable reaches fine. Infact I have to shove some of the cable into the tray bit in the centre console!

Depending on the connectors, you could probably get a cheap extention from ebay

The satnav i got is the magellan roadmate 1200... bit basic but it was £65 in tesco....

I've had no cable issuse with my "baby" tomtom

I have a TomTom One and I loop the cable through the passenger seat reach adjustment hoop then up past the glovebox, trapping a little wire in there to keep it away from the gearstick.

We are looking into getting a satnav but with so many to choose from it`s difficult to decide, so far Tom tom seems to be the one most people are getting.

I'd try and stay away from the lesser known brands and plump for a tomtom or a garmin. the lesser known ones often have less up to date maps, and at least with garmin and tomtom you know that you'll be able to update the maps/speed camera databases with ease.

I owned 2 garmins before I got my tomtom, and I have to say the tomtom is better all around. One of my friends had a tomtom and switched to garmin and he prefers that so i guess its personal opinion.

If I was buying another i'd go for another widescreen one... much easier to read and operate with the bigger screen.

So which Tomtom would you recommend.

I'd go for a TomTom One.

In fact, I did and couldn't be happier.

Also, don't worry about speed camera site subscriptions... just download the locations and set them as POIs (Points Of Interest).

As above, but i'd spend the little extra and get the tomtom one xl (same as the one but widescreen :D). Its what I have at the moment and i'm well chuffed with it.

Halfords have the same one as me for 119 at the moment:

TomTom ONE XL Classic UK & ROI Sat Nav from Halfords Price £119.00

Not sure if they're cheaper elsewhere

You could also have a look round for a cheap TomTom GO520.....They were replaced by the x30 series earlier this year but you can still get them if you look around. The 520 was around or slightly above £200 normally but i got mine about three month ago for less than £150 brand new from ebuyer.co.uk.

They are also exactly the same internally as the x30 series the only differences are they are grey not black and run the slightly older software but the maps can still be updated etc...

Cheers

Dave.

the pitfalls of pikey satnav, always go for tomtom or garmin i say :D

i know a few people that have thought they were making an awesome saving by buying pikey satnav but they have all regretted it for various reasons.

Ive just bought a Garmin 255w (europe) and am very happy with it, I would definately reccommend one!

My satnav lead runs from the nav in the bottom right of the screen, down the edge of the fusebox cover at the a pillar, tucks behind the trim above the bonnet release handle, then continues underneath the sill trim, to pop out under the driver's seat where it then plugs into an extension / doubler from the ciggie socket itself underneath the rear floor mat. The tmc lead runs parallel with under the sill trim and still picks stuff up!

After having tomtom3 on a pda for years with now issues, i thought i would upgrade to a navman unit - simply because it has the best looking graphics. It's a pile of ****e - constantly crashing and rebooting, and it doesn't even have an option to avoid the current road if you get stuck in traffic.

I have never had a single issue with my tomtom one - the woman who lives inside it never gets cross when I take a wrong turn, I've never had to reboot it and it's never given up on me! I had a sony one which I used to try and get to my mate's in derbyshire - I hadn't even left Liverpool before it gave up and the arrow marker just sat there spinning in constant circles. Totally useless. The Tomtom is excellent - it's very easy to use, it comes with speed camera warnings built in and can be updated online quickly and easily.

Looking at the Tomtom one, pound for pound it seems to be the best at that price.

You can buy a cig lighter extension lead from Halfrauds - I fed the cable for this under the centre console and the main part has a sticky back pad and fits perfectly into the ash tray. Bit fiddly but well worth it as it means the cable for Sat nav/ phones is only going straight down by the stereo rather than back to the rear of the handfbrake.

Lemme see if I can get a pic.

I bought a pikey satnav but had to return it as it only worked when towing a caravan or tarmac-ing somebody's driveway.
