Service type - advice needed

Featured Replies

Hi. Will soon get my long awaited brand new octavia II. Its a 1,9 TFI PD 105.

I was wondering which service type I should choose, long-life(variable) or fixed?

I've heard that the vw and audis that generally have more engine problems after a few years are those with long-life, especially turbo-issues...

Normal use for my car will be a round trip to work, about 16k each way or 10 miles ..... Note that I live in Norway, can get pretty cold here.....

Have tried to search the site for this, but havent found the "perfect" answer, if it is there, forgive the tread.

lingo.....

I was going to ask a similar question as i take delivery in the morning of my Octavia 2.0TDi L&K DSG . Mine however will be used mostly on motorways and racking up perhaps up to 1500 miles a week.

I'm picking my CR vRS up in a couple of months and the dealer said that its cheaper for fixed servicing if you do over about 14kmiles a year.

I'll be going fixed as I don't feel comfortable leaving a car nearly 2 years before its looked at!

I'm no mechanic, but I can give a first approximation of the answer.

I would work on the basis that the car should be serviced no less than once a year.

To get that on 20 miles per day - 7,500 per year, go for fixed servicing.

On 1500 miles a week - 75,000 a year, fixed is going to be too frequent - go for variable.

Both of these cars are being well treated. Ten miles is a long enough trip to get the engine up to temperature, and motorway driving is easy work. It is short trips that put extra strain on the engine and its oil.

im sure i read in the skoda book that variable servicing is aimed at people doing 25miles minimuim a day.

I would suggest taking the variable service and making the following additions to it:

- Air filter -> Replace every 10k or every variable service.

- Fuel filer -> Do every second variable service

- Oil -> Change at 10k for fresh long life oil and a new filter.

I'd not have said about this extra oil change until I did one recently, but I'd get it changed every 10k. I've just taken out the oil and put in the long life oil and a new filter and the engine is much smoother, quieter and generally happier.

If you're only doing small miles then as said sitting on fixed interval and adding the extra filter changes as follows:

- Air filter every service (10k miles)

- Fuel filter every 40k miles.

im sure i read in the skoda book that variable servicing is aimed at people doing 25miles minimuim a day.

It never used to say that but I'm hearing it more and more.

I do 65 miles a day and always get the maximum service period in miles from the oil, but I still wouldn't want to do that any more.

Ok, my car wont be here until the end of the week.... will see then :)

Hope you don't mind me jumping your thread Reptil!

Can someone explain how you get the display to show "Distance before next service".

I searched on the forum, but it came up with many different options (variations of pressing and holding the odemeter with ignition in ON, OFF, key in, running, not running, etc). I'm confused :(

Perhaps once we have a definite answer, someone could add it to the "useful hints" in the sticky thread above?

no prob, may even learn something myself :)

turn ignition on, then switch off and hold in odometer reset button for a few seconds.

You're a gentleman, thanks. :)

You're also in a similar situation to me.

My 1.9 TDI is a month old, only 1000Km on the clock. I'm on variable servicing, but am also concerned about whether this is the right option.

I see you drive around 32Km a day, I drive around 50Km.

And I'm in central Finland, so I understand your comments about the Nordic weather ;)

no probs, the miles will go to zero, but will return once the display shows the miles/days to next service.
