Help required on fitting springs? Tips or tools required?

Featured Replies

Hi ive just bought some new 40mm koni springs for my skoda fabia 1.4mpi, i just wondered apart from spring clamps do i need any special tools, i remember ages ago reading about needing something to do with the front hub or around that area a special tool ? i maybe wrong read it ages ago it mite have even been on a golf forum.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated

Regards Dan

slightly unrelated, but where did you get them and how much were they?

iv just recently fitted some lowering and used this as a rough guide Fabia-vrs.com - Eibach -25mm Lowering Suspension

the only other tool which was required was a 14mm spline for the bolt that goes through the hub and leg and a large hammer lol

Andy

Yeah i had to buy the m14 XD socket too...

Be prepared to be annoyed with the car for a bit whilst your doing it.....

But it will be worth it in the end....

As for someone finding the link, well I spent quite a long time looking for one on this forum - and failed! So it was in an obvious place!!!

Anyway, the tool for spreading the hub can be bought, or ordered from Laser via Halfords - it comes as a two piece kit, the second partwill not be needed until you have bought your Audi TT !! If you have time on your hands you could look on the Laser Tools site - maybe its called Tools Connection - hunt around and you should find this tool and then you know its number. A chisel can be used but you could damage the hub and get even grumpier when the chisel keeps flying out!

Youndsyd was right - you really need to be in a good mood before attacking these little cars - they will break you down - honest, and the M14 spine bit can be found on www.justoffbase.co.uk as it seems that most spline kits stop at M12 (another moan!).

I would also consider a chisle to seperate the hub a little so it's easier to remove the hub fron the leg.

I will also second youngsyd's comment be prepared to be really frustrated with the car.

I would highly recommend cleaning all the nut's and bolts before attemptng to remove them as they may get seized especially the bolt for the steering rack.

I take it that you mean the track rod end nyloc nut - well I wish that I had bought a thread cleaning set to clear off some of the corrosion on the threaded end first as this nut jammed half way out and the taper came loose - I ended up spending about 30 minutes trying to split this nut before cutting the top nyloc section off. If I were you I'd start buying some nuts, bolts etc now - one side might need the drive shaft taking off and you will need a new locking nut here as well as it being good practise to replace all nyloc nuts and the strut top mounting bolts - oh and another thing that might go wrong could be the top bearing coming apart when you compress the spring - so you might want to buy a pair of them as well. All nasty messy challenges I'm afraid - but no gain without pain - as they say!

I used a Chisel for the spreading of the hub, and i had to put a new TRE on the NAS as the nylock had had enough and wasnt moving....

The hub spreading tool can be bought from VW or Skoda dealers for sub £10. Much better than trying with a chisel.

You can also pick up a track rod end removal tool quite cheaply which makes that job much easier. It is worth ordering a couple of spare nute for the job though.

Aren't those Eibach springs specifically meant for the vRS Fabia i.e. the heavy lump at the front? As the 1.4mpi isn't as heavy, are the springs actually going to lower the car as much as you hope as there won't be as much weight compressing them???

well they claim to lower the front and rear 40mm but i wont know until i get them on. Right ill think ill buy when of them tools from vw/skoda to spread the hub. Would you guys recommend on me cutting the bumpstops the same way you have done on your vrs? i just thought while there off i should give it a go and kill two birds with one stone, as its 40mm drop do you think it will be worth it, to avoid a choppy ride as u get with the eibach's? or does this not apply to koni springs?
