Never let sisters borrow a Felicia

Featured Replies

My sister borrowed my car to go Traffod Centre and then she rings to tell me theres steam from under the bonnet

FFS Gonna wait for the RAC to tow my car home but I used it earlier on fast flowing roads with no problem.

My sister's borked my Felicia :(

I have the feeling that temp gauge might have been hovering somewhere near the red marker before the steam? Poor sister :) Luckily my sister has no desire to drive my car because "it's an estate", lol.

Ouch! :(

Hope it's a relatively easy fix.

I hope so too. Gonna have to see what the RAC man says.

I'm hoping it's not the head gasket.

**edit** RAC man suspects the head gasket but I'll have to have a look tomorrow.

My sister has AA personal cover so why she didnt ring them first :thumbdwn:

Ouuu could say something about this, but we have female members.

So would probably get a grilling back!

Anyhow matey, hope its a relatively easy fix (stuck thermostat) or the likes and wouldn't require too much work.

Correct :thumbup::D

don't blame your poor sister just because you've neglected looking after your car, checking coolant level and so on... ;) Thank her instead for taking appropriate measures :)

Hopefully not as bad as a head gasket (smoke from under the bonnet not a typical symptom, in that case it must be totally blown). Maybe just a leaking hose? In which case the temp gauge won't show anything abnormal (at least not to begin with).

if you need it, i've got a spare cylinder head for a 1.6 knocking about somewhere

ha ha ha its funny but i feel for you mate. wouldn't let my sister anywhere near mine, hope its something simple and easy to fix

Oil and water doesnt appear to have mixed when cold

The dipstick level is normal and the water I put in last night stil is water.

I've started it up and let it run.

When it gets warmer the water pressure seems to be increasing near the coolant filler cap and then overflowing from there.

Stop the engine

If I take the oil filler cap off then its white.

Will get it pressure tested later today if I can.

If im lucky it could just be the water pump and I'll get the cambelt changed too.

If its the HG then

What makes it worse is that my Dad says maybe its time to get another car. But i havent got a job at the moment either. :thumbdwn:

But i'm not getting rid of my Felly yet anyway.

Never lend a sister anything technical, unless she's prepared to lend you her equivalent ;) (so my sis doesn't get to borrow Samantha, cos I'm not even allowed to shunt Zebedee out the drive so my mum can get Lydia out).

Waterpump mate. The thermostats shoot out the back of the housing and break the waterpump impellor.

the thermostat is on the opposite end of the engine...

in this pic, pump is on the right (driven by the timing belt) then the water gets pumped up to the thermostat housing via a black plastic tube along the back of the engine, it's very unlikely for the stat to jump out and slide all the way down against the water pressure

All the best people are random, or at least realise that growing old is compulsory; growing up isn't!! :D

At the garage now and it seems the fan switch has gone again as it doesn't cut in unless the wires are connected without the switch

Got a new fan switch on order.

Went for a test drive with the fan permanently on and the temp guage stayed between cold and halfway. So a new switch is on order.

I'm not mad at my sister, just worried as my Dad was talking Corsas earlier today.

But it looks like the HG is alright, the Felly is tough :D

Lad i use to work with had the 1.3 felicia....and it got some right stick! Never failed down to anything engine gearbox related.

Only when he reversed into a space and left full lock on and took the key out, and the tumblers let go in the ignition barrel!

Had fun getting it on the tow truck hahaha!

...and the temp guage stayed between cold and halfway....

which sounds a bit low, what about your stat?

Good to hear that the trouble was one that can be solved easily and cheaply

Poor diagnosis by the RAC :thumbdwn:

which sounds a bit low

remember the fan was permanently on though

Yes, but that shouldn't matter, should it? Stat should only let a trickle of coolant (or none) into the rad if coolant temp is lower than "halfway mark". Of course, gauges may vary, so in between" may be normal for the Captain's car (even if halfway seems to be normal for most Fellies).
