Knocking from front wipers

Featured Replies

A little while ago my front wipers developed a nasty knocking noise when in use. I took the mechanism out and noticed that the rubber bushes have perished to almost nothing, giving the motor enough slack to rattle around. At least that's what I hope it is as it's an easy enough fix. Has anyone had the same problem, or a similar knocking from the wipers?

Theres a thread on here somewhere with photos for a fix to this problem. Can,t find it at the moment.

Thanks Taxi 219. I did do a search, but didn't come up with much I'm afraid. If anyone out there knows of the thread, please post a link.

Thanks!!

oooh.. I have not heard of this before. Hopefully someone can find the link and post it here.

If I had been doing it properly, I would have finished it with "... and post it hear" :-)

Am I missing something? Are we playing "Spot the Sarcasm"? Can I go first?

I had this on my Octy and then the wiper linkage sheared off from the motor due to wear and corosion. I had to have a new linkage fitted, Was being lazy at the time and the garage fitted it at a cost of £120 but think the part was only about £40.

Cheers Justinbarrow! After getting a break from the weather, and enough motivation to take it out again, I noticed that the linkage had indeed sheared off from the motor plate. To be fair, they dont seem to be attached very securely. What did they use, Blu-Tak?

After finding out what the problem was, and since I had it out anyway, I decided on the bodge approach. I lined the linkage back up and stuck it in the vice. I drilled a couple of holes straight through the plate and linkage rod and bolted them together. After making sure that the little motor arm cleared the new bolts, it got stuck back in the car and am happy to announce that it works perfectly. Just in time too, as it has started to rain again!! I did remeber to take some pics and will get around to posting them (at some stage...)

From personal experience, I would take the scuttle panel off and check the linkage and wiper motor. If the linkage is loose then that could be the problem. How old are your wiper blades?
