RE-Map and Engine Life

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been reading threads on re-mapping Fab VRS's.

I understand that remapping will increase turbo pressure, derv, air intake etc.

I do quite a lot of miles in a year so engine life upto 100k is quite important so I wonder if any of you techies could answer if the engine in under stress and strain all of the time after a re-map or only when booting it?

I would like ecomony during the week and not too much stress on the engine whislt sat on the motorway but would like to shock a few people at the weekend every now and again :D

P.S SWMBO wants to chip-it so I can't let this oppertunity go... P.S the car has just covered 1800 miles in three weeks.

Thanks for any help

I can't say for 100k, but mine has now done 18k on the re-map and I have had absolutely no problems with mine. Actually, no. Make that 1 problem. I can't get the big grin off my face whenever I drive it. :D

It will be put under a bit more strain sure, but driven carefully and not thrashed everywhere, it should last almost as long as a standard engine. ;)

I'd imagine just take care of it like you normally will and it should be fine. The clutch and flywheel may come under additional strain, but a company like Jabba or AmD should customize the map so that it does not put too much extra strain on those components.

The main complaints I've heard of are slipping clutches (which I understand you could just as easily end up with on a standard car, if you were to hammer it all the time), and shuddering flywheel - which I understand to be caused by the effect of having more than 300 lb ft of torque at revs lower than 2,200 rpm putting strain on that particular component - again with a customized remap that should not be a problem.

Also (and you should probably do this anyway), make sure you give the Turbo time to cool if you have been giving it some heavy right boot - the easiest way to achieve this is to drive gently for the last couple of minutes of the journey, or if not, leave the engine running for a little while.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, if anyone knows any better.

I do let the turbo cool after long trips as per Skoda guide lines

Agree with this and also make sure you let the oil get up to temp before driving the car hard too! As long as it's serviced at 10k intervals, the car should be fine after a remap, although I don't know if we have anyone who's covered 100k yet ;)

Not on a diesel anyway.

Jon's petrol octy had done over 100k when it failed but that wasn't necessarily down to the remap and I think its fair to say that it had had a very hard life.

37000 on our 110 bhp Oil burner & as good as the day it was mapped, same smile as well !

Intrested to know the most miles for both octy and fab covered after a re-map???

JON!? ;) I'd hazard a guess the octy did around 100K in various guises of "remap" which is a testimony to the 1.8T when remapped (and beyond ;))

As for the diesel time will tell, as not many of us have run remapped diesels. Personally I've ran around 15K remapped, but with diesel engines being so strong anyway, I don't think any are going to "throw a rod" any time soon. ;)

Oh, and regular servicing wll be essential to maintaining the life too - regular clean oil, new filters, cambelt at 60K, etc etc. I don't see why a remapped TDI should not go as long as a standard one, if looked after! Same should apply to a 1.8T too IMO.
