What tyres?

Featured Replies

Howdy,

I asked this the other month and didnt get a conclusive answer !

Just want to get the best VRS replacement tyres available - dont care how much or little they cost and not intrested in what they look like.

Any suggestions ?, for everyday driving use - no track days and Im not a part time rally driver !

Maybe another set of the standard fit Continentals are best ?

Avoid continentals, they are known for sidewalls cracking, I have a friend who works at kwik fit and he says it happens loads with them.

I've just got some pirelli p zero's on the back recently and I'm about to get two on the front, so I can't give a proper verdict yet on them yet...

The toyo t1r's are the best general purpose type tyre end of. I have gone through 4 sets of tyres in the past 18 months and the only thing that upset the toyo's was silverstone when the track was greasy in the dry they have no equall unless you go down the road legal track day tyre route, then you want toyo r888's if you are on a budget or the michelin cup tyres whose correct name escapes me at the moment if you have no budget

i disagree, whilst the toyos are a pretty good tyre, they are not in the same league as a Michelin PE2

Anybody on here tried Marangoni Zeta Lineas on a vRS (or anything else come to that!)?

Camskills stock them at £55 per corner.

On the car you had them on, i find that allthough very good they give up grip very quickly when pushed hard for long periods. Remember tyres perform differently on different cars

I have never gone wrong with my Kumho Ecsta's.

Infact, I need 2 new fronts very soon, and will just replace them like for like :)

I've gone for the proxes, they went up £10 over night, how gutted am I lol. DOH!!!

bit late to join in but i have had them all on my company car from the most expensive pilots down to the worst by miles good year excellence, they came off after a month as just unsafe in the wet i know the proxes have a rep as a boy racer tyre but they are good wet and dry and last, 225 55 16 0n a 150bhp saab 22000 miles and still worked. uniroyals best in wet by miles noisy in dry, contis good in dry not great in wet and one you may laugh at hankook a really suprising budget tyre.pirellis good year avon all living on thier name

  • 2 weeks later...

Interesting stuff guys, thanks for the debate above.

Has anyone tried the Avon ZZ3? At the moment I'm torn between the F1 GSD3 (which I've used on my Superb to good effect previously) and the ZZ3... although I can't seem to find anyone who's used them, let alone on a Furby.

Any thoughts?

try a company called cooper tires, i've got them on my fabia vrs, they were 65 pounds inc fitting ect, they also have a deal if you say fit a brand new pair and 2 weeks later you get a nail in the side wall they will replace the tire free for charge, then money off as your tread goes down untill bald! i think there made by avon tires, sods law that i got a nail in my rear conti 2days after i fitted the front pair! lo. hope this has been of help to you

I have fitted Vredestein SporTrac3s to both the front of the missus Furby vRS and all round on my Toledo and they are by far the best tyres I have fitted. Gripper and quieter than the Michelins I had on mine and far far quieter than the Federal 595s that were on the front of the vRS.

In the wet SporTrac3s are hard to be imo and don't break traction to easily

Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 - the best fuel economy, very hard wearing, but still great grip wet or dry. Yes, they are very expensive, but they're great. Also, if you have access to Costco, they can be had for less than the Goodyears.

Another vote for these. Nobody seems to know about them or recommend them, but I had a set of 205/45/16, slightly stretched over 16x8 Design 90s on a MK3 Golf and until someone drove into the back of me (allowing me to get my vRS ) they were superb. Only had them on for 500 miles or so, and took a little bedding in, but grip was fantastic and didn't seem to noisy.

I don't have a great deal of experience with performance tyres, but I would definitely shortlist another set of the PE2s. I've been told by my local dealer that whilst F1s grip awesomely, they wear quicker and are VERY noisy. Whilst I don't want ditch finders, I also don't want to be deafened. I suppose most of you wanting performance aren't bothered by extra noise, however.

I have just fitted four new Hankook tyres to my Golf 150pd. They are Hankook EVO V12's and they are either winning or coming second in the German tyre tests at the mo. They are beating all the big brands. In one of the Links below you will see that the Toyo T1R comes nearly last out of 11 tyres tested! The Michelin PE2 only comes about average in the field, for what they cost you would expect them to win every test.

If you don't understand German just go to the last page and look at the results. I found camskill the cheapest place to get mine from, they worked out at £25 to £30 cheaper a tyre than the Michelins, Bridgestone and Continentals etc that they beat in the test:

conti sport contact 2 - so far no problems - wear for about 18000 miles moderate to occasional hard driving - struggle a bit on damp roads with leaves .

:eek:is that for a 16"? Thats way too much cash for a unbrande tyre,my 215/40/17's toyot1r's were that price,i'm in shock those budgets should be about 30 quid,if more get a branded tyre,or some wanlee ditchfinders.

Hi all, This is my first post!! Some of the tyres mentioned I have no experience of. At the moment my Fabia vRS runs on goodyear eagle f1's and they dont feel to bad, not that great in the wet, but otherwise alright. On my previous car, a 2005 seat leon cupra r, I replaced the standard fit pirelli p zero rosso's with toyo proxes T1-R's and the difference was awesome. Better in every way. I bought these of the internet, can't remember which site, but saved a small fortune! Cost me about a tenner a wheel for new tyres to be fitted, so all good!!

Martin:)

Blckcircle - 4 Proxes T1-R's for £250 fitted. Bargain!

Those Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 might be good but they are a fair bit more expensive than the gsd3/t1r options iirc.

I went for the gsd3 (£300 for 4 fitted) and have had 10,000 happy miles so far including a handful of ring laps.

Ive driven T1rs on other cars and don't like them as much as my gsd3s.

Its difficult to make comparrisions as most people compare old tyres nackered tyres against brand spanking new. Do you think 4yr & 40,000 mile old michelins or new gsd3s will feel better ?

Just make sure you don't buy something called a ditchfinder.

camskill good prices for toyos, just got some morethere, looking at the tyre tests on line is not a great way to predict performance, those reviews can be left by anyone. But i had hankooks on a mondeo company car 130 duratorq and they were good, deffo not an unbranded tyre anymore as standerd on a lot of fords

Have the new hankook V12 Evo tyres fitted very very good tyres, good price, quiet, good grip, so far wearing well.

i have just brought a set of 205/40/16 toyo proxes 4 they are brilliant tyres just as good as the T1R's but with a hell of a lot less noise
