1.8t MPG/Maxidot question??

Featured Replies

Been driving my '58 plate 1.8t octy estate around for a month now and two things are kinda bugging me and I didn't know if anyone here could shed some light??...

1. Maxidot only seems to show MPG in two ways: that day/that journey and on how you're driving that exact moment. This is quite annoying as my golf used to show the average MPG for ALL the driving i've done, not just since I turned the key! (Personally, the second measurement is totally useless as it can bounce between about 4MPG and 160MPG in two seconds: completely pointless!)

Basically, is there any way to set the maxidot with VAGCOM to show total accumulated MPG & trip MPG as this would seem a lot more useful. I can't judge how economical i'm being over a long time as it resets every day and gives no cumulative reading. For example, if I do a 20 mile journey at 30MPG on a sunday, two weeks later i'll have no record and have probably forgotten the MPG of that journey, and the days in between so I have no idea how i've been driving. Hope that makes sense?:o

2. Possibly because of the above issue, my 1.8t seems to only be registering about 28/29MPG on my 20 mile drive back from Reading. I'm driving quite leisurely because i'm trying to up the MPG and be economical (and obviously, I have no cumulative display so can't judge it over long periods), but this seems quite low to me bearing in mind the figures quoted by Skoda. How are other people finding the same engine in regards to MPGm as to me it's a bit disappointing... although it's the only thing that IS disappointing about my car... that and point number 1!!:D

You have 2 trip computors, "1" shows the avarage for the journey or multiple journeys within two hours.

"2" will keep all the figures you require, till you reset the trip.

There should be a button on the underside of the right hand stalk which switches between the two.

Your MPG will improve as the miles go on. Typically it will continue to improve upto about 15K miles and then level off.

Ah, I was flicking between the instant figure and the two hour figure by using the end of the stalk. So what you're saying is that by hitting the 'ok' button on the bottom it'll flick from 1 to 2? I noticed the little '1' in the corner but thought it was to distinguish between the instant display which shows no number and that one.

If that's the case, then THAT'S exactly what I was after, so I thank you. I'm gonna have a quick look in the manual about it but just in case it's not there how do you reset it then?

Just found it, you hold it down!

There should be a button on the underside of the right hand stalk which switches between the two.

Holding this button in for a few seconds also zeroes the display. It only resets one of the Trip computers - whichever was being shown at the time.

I've now found the bit in the manual which confirms what you're saying: it was at the start under 'Memory' and not the bit I was reading on 'Consumption'!

However, I did read a bit saying that at 99 hours 59 minutes or 9999 kilometres it'll reset. Is it possible to turn this off at all cos i'd personally just like it to continue until I decide to reset it, not the preset computer system? Not keen on that at all.

it'll reset because if it went to 100 hours or 10000km, it wouldn't have enough digits on the counter to display it...

bit like some old cars went from 99,999 miles back round to 1 mile (instead of 100,000) :)

Q.1 you have memory 1 (which deletes after 2 hours) and memory 2 which doesnt. best bet is to get the manual and give it a good read as it explains clearly in there about the different memories.

Thanks. I understand why it stops at 99 but I was wondering if it can be set so it DOESN'T do this. Can't see why it should affect the MPG display if it goes to a billion miles driven as the MPG figure is never gonna get to 100. Just cos the miles/hours you've driven reaches a set limit, logically it's possible that it shouldn't affect the MPG reading, if that makes sense?

mine is averaging around 30 mpg around town and just over 40 mpg at motorway speeds.

Very impressed with the engine so far, although I am giving the Revo remap serious consideration:D

Such a gulf between UK speak & Australia.

I have no idea what you mean by 58plate but assume you mean the 118kw 1.8T?

And Maxidot? That's the large format display between the dials - the MFD?

My MFD average from new to 99 hours (flicked over at ~5600km) was 7.0L/100km (41MPG?? - we've been SI units for ~30 years) but actual was 7.1L/100km.

I'm at 6100km now & there's been a definite improvement since 5000km - my daily 45km commute is now down to ~6.5L/100km (43mpg?) on the MFD and looks like it might even out at ~6.2L/100km. That's all at our Nanny State speed limit of 100-110kmh (because Aussies can't drive & go into a panic at 115kmh:rolleyes:).

You have to run 98ron to get those mileage figures though.

PINKPANTHER: Keep us up to date with the REVO I'm interested myself. I'm waiting for the APR solution & the GIAC so I can take advantage of the free trial & make sure it won't hurt my economy too much.

At this point I'd like to thank all you Brits for making the Skoda successful in the UK. If it wasn't for the good results in the UK, Skoda wouldn't be in Aussieland.

58 plate is the latest car to be released, we get two new plates a year, april time is 08 and september time 58 last year it was 07 and 57 and next year 10 and 68. hope that helps.

Yeah, it's a bit concerning. My car has done just over 1000 miles now and the memory 2 setting is showing just 28.8mpg! In conflict with some people saying you don't need to with modern engines, I decided to run the engine in, old skool style, for the first 1000 miles so i've hardly been hammering it, only accelerating hard once in a while to overtake grandads and whatnot. Quite sedate driving, to be honest!

So is this inkeeping with experiences of other people who have new 1.8t's or is my car a duffer??!!:rofl:

Keep going and the MPG will slowly improve, 1000 miles is not really enough.

I drove home from the dealer (45km along motorway) accelerating from 2000-4500rpm in 3rd & 4th up to about 120kph then decelling back to 70kph - using about 1/2 - 3/4 throttle. The next day I drove 200km down the coast with the family on board. We all got jack of the accelerate/decellerate caper fairly quick so I just drove with all the other traffic, didn't use 6th gear & kept the engine spinning between 2000-4500 with occasional squirts up to 6000rpm. SWBO drove the 200km home & forgot there was 5th & 6th, so I just let her drive it in 3rd / 4th letting the revs rise & fall without putting a lot of strain on the engine or letting it lug. I more or less followed the same pattern up to 1000km then started using 6th. I didn't thrash it but haven't babied it either.

Every workday i have to enter the Motorway from a 180 degree 45kmh cloverleaf. I usually take it at 80kph in 4th then give it a squirt to merge with the traffic - usually I'm doing 130-150kph by the time I back off - I think loading it up like that is good for it as it forces the rings onto the cylinder bore & aids gas sealing.

I'd suggest you start driving "normally" and the fuel economy will sort itself out after a short while.

What octane rating fuel are you using?

Will it not be 09 & 59 in 2009?

To behonest, my style of driving IS taking it easy. The manual says not to rev it above three quarters of maximum for the first thousand, but all i've been doing is not really going above 4000rpm, which wasn't too difficult as i don't do that normally. All in all I haven't really been driving that differently from the norm so I'm hoping it'll all just balance out. I now feel more able to release the horses than before but again, I don't pan it everywhere anyway. I love the fact my car is such a great cruiser. I normally use either 95 or 99 ron; whatever's available and what I feel like.

Yes, next year should be 09 & 59, I think it was just a typo.

ps, i'm not an old man!

Will it not be 09 & 59 in 2009?
yes completley correct, i had a 2009 calender open at the side of me and just went to 2010 instead of 2009:eek:

Not at all i ran mine in the same way taking it easy for the first 1k, it took about 3k before i started to notice the fuel economy improve as i too wasnt happy with economy and after running the car the lack of top speed too. it will all happen in time, just be patient!!!
