Rear drum brakes - slight binding ok?

Featured Replies

Been working on my rear brakes. Only managed one side so far. I measured the circumference of the edges of the brake shoes adjusting to try get them quite close to the diameter of the drum, the drum went on easily (in fact it felt like there was even a little clearance as the drum went on), however when I came to put the wheel back on it seems to be binding enough to stop the wheel spinning faster than it would otherwise - have backed off the handbrake adjuster - and only done the bearing nut hand tight.

Main reason I ask is this guy YouTube - How to Adjust Brake Drums on Cars : How to Make Final Adjustments to Car Brakes seems to think they should bind quite a bit, so if they're ok binding a little I may as well leave it and aim to get the other side the same.

a little binding is ok, so long as you can still turn the wheel with your hands

Try banging the drum with a heavy hammer once youve fitted it, sometimes the shoes just need centering on the back plate and the drum, the shock from hitting it usually works, (they will take a heffty wollop without breaking and i doubt youd be able to break them with a hammer)
