HID conversion.. Help!!!!!

Erm........... just get the HIDS4U Ultimate kit! Works fine on my Leon.

They now have the option of anti glare HID bulbs as well.

I have banged on about the legality of these kits a few times on here and other forums.

Yes, there is a chance that insurance would be invalidated etc as its technically an MOT fail etc.

In an Octy with projector headlamp units I would imagine that it is unlikely to get stopped or checked on MOT. As its the projector part of the unit that disperses the light from the source, it shouldnt really matter what the source is. On a reflector headlamp, the source reflects onto the reflector and is output through the lamp. If that source is in a different place to what the reflector was designed for (halogens) then the output from the reflector will be in a different place and so causing scatter.

You will undoubtedly get more light from the HID kit but the beam pattern should be the same, please report back.

Just keep an eye on the headlamp level when you have extra weight in the car or back seats occupied etc so not to dazzle folk.

I personally think that when anyone mentions after-market HIDs they should just post a warning.

I'm sure many people aren't aware of the legality - basically they aren't if you're on a public road.

I'd just hate to see someone install them without knowing the risk and the first they find out about it is when they fail their MOT.

Also remember that insurance company's don't like paying out.

So you have an accident and an insurance inspector comes out to look at your car and finds after-market HIDs - instant MOT failure.

I just think people should be aware of the risks.

As for not getting found it - good chance that would be the case.

However MOT centres have been told to crack down on things like number plates and their need to have post codes and the BS number on.

So if they are checking those kind of things the detection of after-market HIDs wouldn't be difficult.

Hi tried 25w resistors in 10, 15 and 33ohm flavours between the pos+ of the original bulb connection and the Hid pos+ connection but all had the same effect, ie no luck. The PWM you mention sounds about right as my car is only 1 month old. Unless the people I bought them off come up with any magic then they are going back (I'm not going to mess about with wiring to batteries and adding relays etc). Ive already spoken to HIDS4U and they seem to know what they are on about, recommending their Ultimate kit that they guarantee will work for the Octavia.

DO NOT connect it to the HID pos+ connection. It has peak voltage of 33 000 volts. It will fry your resistor and in worst case it will fry the ballast.

Adding a relay for the lights is easy 'cause there's a voltage bar inside the engine compartment fuse box. You can easily get the battery voltage from there.

But I do understand that you don't want to start and play with relays etc.

Get another set that is guaranteed to work. Much easier althou a little more pricey.

Thanks, you say dont connect between the pos+ on bulb connector and pos+ ( red wire spade connector) on HID, these two are meant to connect to each other during normal installation so wouldnt adding a resistor there be safe, isnt it the HID box further along the circuit that boost the voltage from 12v to 33000v?. If not where do you put the resistors without cutting wires?

It must be fitted before ballast, between it's (+) input and ground.

This is the right place, and if there is PWM problem, you have to add capacitor 2200-4700 uF / 25V in parallel to the resistor.

Take care to polarity of capacitor - the pin marked with (---) is going to ground!

If this is not working, you have to add an diode (If >= 10 Amp) like this:

-+-|>|-+---> pos(+)
|     |
-     |
| |   ===
|R|   ___ C
| |    |
-     |
|     |
gnd   gnd

There is a variant with inductor instead of diode also...
