Oil light on

Featured Replies

Took my 1997 1.6 Glxi felicia for a MOT today Guys at the garage said to me that the oil light came on when it was there

Never happened to me before car had been standing outside my house for roughly 6 months with no use.

Oil level seems ok

There is a slight rattle but nothing extraordinary

Is this a scam by the garage or should be worried of a major problem:confused:

Hi and welcome to briskoda. Love the colour of your felicia, saw one that colour on ebay recently :) Could just be a duff oil pressure switch? They only cost about a fiver. Hopefully someone who knows about the 1.6 will be along soon :)

yeah, i would try changing the oil pressure switch.. it's either a 22 or a 24mm spanner (i can't remember which off my head)

will they be able to tell if any oil is getting in the engine where it should be?

I'd agree about changing the oil pressure switch, particularly if the car had an oil change just before the light appeared. DAMHIKT.

To be really thorough, remove the connector on the switch and put the ignition key in to the first position, the oil light should *not* come on. If it does the wire is being earthed somewhere.

Prob the oil pressure switch. The 1.6 is a solid engine, simple to maintain (ish) but its reliable.

at least it's not leaking from the switch like my uncles Corsa was!!!

I had an issue with mine where the pressure switch light on the dash didn't come on.

Changed the bulb in the dash and it worked after that.

its coming on at 3000revs so does that help any1 would the pressure be a bit low? or will it be a faulty switch

3000 revs... are you sure the oil pump/pick-up is not blocked, might be worth whipping off the sump to take a look at the pick-up

:iagree: - In fact I wish you'd said that sooner Schuey, because switch problems are more usually associated with lowish revs.

they only said at the garage to me this morning that is was doing it at 3000revs whilst they were doing the emmissions test

Our old Audi (1985) displayed a similar symptom twice: Oil pressure light came on at 2,500 rpm. First time it really frightened me since it was against all logic - pressure should increase when oil pump runs faster.

It was a thin wire from the distributor to earth that had come loose... not the first thing that came to mind! Might be worth checking for loose electric wires.
