Quick oil question for VRS

Featured Replies

Hi.

Had my Oct VRS for just over a year now and have loved every minute of driving it...just had to get that out of the way as i've been a member since then and not posted.

Im going to have it serviced next month for the first time (in my ownership). It is currently on variable schedule but im changing it to a fixed as it only does about 7000 miles a year. I want to supply the oil but after about an hour of searching through various posts im still not 100% sure which oil is best.

I read that for fixed servicing I need an oil that meets VW 500 standards and www.opieoils.co.uk says that Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40 is ok for fixed but would I be better with fully synthetic because of the short journeys/low miles per year.

I've also found members using synta gold fully synthetic but i can't find anywhere on the net that sells it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i know this topic has been covered a lot.

Thanks

Any oil that has SM spec or VW 507 will have the highest protection for the vw engine.

I personnally switch to Lucasoil 10w30 racing oil as exceded all specs for that engine but as stated in hundreds of posts 0w30 upto 10w40 is more than fine and is very reliable just don't buy cheap asda sh#t.

Thanks for the quick response yellotaxi. I wouldn't even consider getting any oil from asda/tesco etc. Where do you get your Lucasoil 10w30 from, anywhere online?

These engines are only supposed to be run on fully synthetic oil, they are quite 'picky' when it comes to oil and it is claimed that a lesser oil will lead to premature oil pump failure. I agree with 'yellotaxi' the correct grade is 0w30, audi specify an 0w40 for same engine but i personally use a good brand 0w30 and wouldn't use anything but full synthetic. Shell do a pretty good oil that meets the spec for about £40, however now we have the credit crunch, i have used the carlube brand at about £17 with no problems at all.

spelling

I assume that you have a Mk1 Octavia vRS? Spec VW 507 00 oil is for diesel engines. Spec VW 504 00 is the equivalent for petrol engines - and includes spec VW 503 00, which is what is recommended in the Owners Manual for variable service intervals. If you buy one of the oils in the thread below, you will be buying a VW 504 00/507 00 oil...

Thanks for all the info guys, really helpful.

Yes DGW, I have a Mk1 Octavia vRS.

Just to confirm, I'm ok to use a VW 503 spec oil even if im going to a fixed interval service. Ive been onto Opie Oils - Oil Recommendations Specialists | Find the right Engine Oil & Performance Products and there is Castrol EDGE 0W-30, but that says it's VW 502 00/503 01/505 00 which isn't VW 503, does this mean its no good? Sorry, i've been looking now for 2 hours, think i'm over complicating things.

I and some others on here use Castrol Edge 5w30 which specifies on the label as being for modern VW engines. It is a longlife oil and therefore more expensive but I would rather my oil had plenty of life in it when I change it

And its a fully synth oil.

And its a fully synth oil.

yep..thats what i used(cost£35 though):mad:im only going to do 6000miles on it as my engine is still like new;)

I have always used Castrol Magnatec 10W40. I once tried Mobil 1 0W40 oil simply because it came in 5 litre tub, and got the mayo effect under the oil cap. Only problem with the Castrol is that it only comes in 4 litre tubs.

I used this for my last service after many recommendations. Will use it again when the time comes.

My work, it retails at £33 5lt but can get online direct at Lucas Oil

go to uk distributor If no one local.

On my 1.8T I use Castrol SYNTEC 0W-30 Full Synthetic (Made in Germany)
