Stalling or low idle when wet/rain

Featured Replies

I'm getting a lot of rain here in the dominican republic, and every time my Felicia 2000 GLX (carburator) gets wet it wont start, start and guives a very low idle, and also (if water is splashed) turn over(stop).

I've check the spark system, WD-40'ed the life of it and this would help, for a while, but still it puts out a very dim spark. so the burn is not efficient at all.

i'm gessing it might be a problem with the engine ground or a short somere in the system when wet.

havent had the time to test out spraying water on the diferent componet and checking how the car reacts to it but i would like you opinion on this.

Oh and by the way, i would like to thanks everyone in this forum, it realy is great to toss out ideas and just try to help one another.

Check the distributer cap as it might be sparking there. We had a problem on my Dads Honda where it sparked from the distributer cap and the car wouldnt fire up. WD40'd and a quick wipe the car was working fine afterwards.

Clean the distributer cap inside and out, and look for cracks or track marks in both it and the rotor arm when it's off.

Thank you Captain Sysko and KenONeill i checked the distributor cap for cracks, and etc... i know that some moisture is getting there, and it does give problem, but as i said in the initial post, i've wd-40 the life out of the hole system, i actualy ended up going to my tryed and teste method of putting petrolium jelly on all the terminals ad securing the conections, it wont stall, but i get very low idle and low responce on the accelerator.

how is the coil and leads? worth checking. Pull them off individually and check for spark against engine block. A nice fat spark should be present.

The only other thing i can think is that the timing is way out

the spark timing is correct, it was timed with a vacuum and with a timing gun, so it dead on and then tweak with the vacuum pressure, right now the timing is advanced by 2 degrees from mark (in the transmision hole where the sensor is on mpi) so i know is not the timing, plus, it only does this when is wet or raining, i've WD-40 the distrubutor, change the spark plugs and put vaseline in the HT leads, this has help a lot, but im gessing i have a weak spark or a ground problem cus is not totaly fix

SOLVED:

The problem is the coil, it seems that is very weak spark, probably not even the correct coil for the car since is not the OEM, now wen it rains the moisture is condensing INSIDE the coil due to a crack maybe (small one) or some crazy thing like that, the thing is, the spark never leaves the coil or is very, very, very dimm, wen it gets warm it work ok enough to run, but is not reliable, so im changin it to a diferent coil, alredy started a post to determine the best coil for the felicia

good to see it wasn't anything too complex.
