Wales - The Best of tour

All,

Thinking of a meet later in the year as a formal Briskoda meet, but in order to maximise that event I'd like to run a mini-meet first to canavas views on the route etc.

The start point is I hope convient to alot of folk as it's not far from the end of the M54.

I'm very open to suggestions for weekends when say 4-5 of you are free, or more :D to come along and have a great "mini-meet"

If you have never driven in Wales, or gone of into the wilds then your in for a treat, let me know if your tempted...

Just to summise; 150+ miles and lots of fun.

Yes, I'd be up for that - when were you thinking of organising it for?

I'm quite fond of the A5 through Snowdonia myself.

As I recall from a few years ago A5 + 205GTi = :D

It would be interesting doing the same in the Fabia!

I should have a couple of spare weekends in June if its any help!

This could be an interesting trip. Might be up for this myself, depending what weekend it would fall on. Don't get that many free weekends at the moment with work and karting.

Ill have some.

Steve

will try and tie it in with a visit to the in-laws in Criccieth - some nice fun roads around there :bouncer:

Okay done some measuring and thinking, potentially two alternative routes here.

Basically, Northern route is the favoured, but serioulsy looking at a southern one. This will be on larger roads than the North....

Right to dates, how is anybody fixed for the 17/18 weekend for ascout/trial run and a bit of fun of course.

Prelude to the offical meet (date TBC).

The best of Wales Tour? May be a bit short, I mean, how long is the eastbound side of the Severn bridge? :D

17/18 of what, May or June? Let me know and I may be up for a spot of scouting.

lol Jon,

yes well....okay discussing with Ian as I type, might do a reccie of the southern route as I can do alot of the northern route from home in the evenings :D.

Although I do suspect the Northern route will win as there is far more choice for all, we'll see, some route sketches later...

May btw for a possible Little Chef to A483 to the coast scout :D

Don't know if you are just navigating using Little Chef's (used to be pub's when I was lad...) or if you are stopping to eat at them. Anyway, I was out 'touring' (no pun intended!) caravan dealers at the weekend (yes it's that serious!) and printed out some maps from the "multimap.com" web site. Every map I printed out included a 25% discount voucher for the Little Chef! Details state that the 25% applies to the entire bill providing at least one meal or breakfast is purchased. That seems like a pretty good offer to me!

Paul

Is the M54 the southern end of Wales, where it joins the M4? I'd be quite interested in charging around some of those Welsh valleys. If its up in the North though, thats hell of a way for me to go.. :( Please can someone who's trying to organise this stick down some ideas of destinations? Cheers

No - the M54 leaves the M6!! just North of Wolverhampton and goes to Telford. So much for the country's motorway numbering scheme :D

Long way to go, nah, you should live in Kent. :D

Colin, OK. If you need a hand... :D

Whoever is making the notes (I AM NOT VOLUNTEERING!) please include the appropriate cautions, I do not wish to loose another sump!

I've just seen the area in question on streetmap.co.uk. It looks a bloody long way for me (but I suppose even longer if you live in Kent. :D) If the Oulton park thing becomes a kind of full-on long weekend, then I'd show a bit more interest. I can't see my tractor Fabia doing much good around Oulton park though. Mid-range acceleration is just not good enough I reckon :(

edit: unless someone feels generous enough to give me a go in their nippy vRS? (please please...) :)

What's that I hear? "get to f***" ?

You know whenever I'm out in the car, with my wife, she brings along this book to read. It's a big volume, always getting in the way and for some reason she insists on reading it upside down or back to front. It is page after page of these funny drawings, loads of lines in blue, red, yellow and even brown; oh and none of these are straight lines I used to think it was maybe a knitting pattern or something, it never seemed to help us on our journey! I'm trying to remeber the title of this book...........yes, that's it a map!

OK, so I'm looking for the M54.............

Sorry guys....couldn't resist!

Jon,

It's a flat route, honest! Vid clip to come :D

Jason,

National Meet around Oulton will happen, but your watching not driving round Oulton, so that should be a bit more enticing. Understand about your distance issue, does seem a long way, but you have got all Friday night to navigate the A49 or M5 :D

I've only just figured out that its a spectator thing... "DOH!" (again) I feel that the spirited drive into North Wales could be fun - thats more my style, spirited. :D (although I may be spirited, but the car is more likely to be sluggish)

Waiter! A saucer of milk for Paul, please!!! :p :Cat:

Well, at least I got the question on that IQ test program on telly, about the number of left turns on a route (and also without having to turn my head on its side too :D)

PS: I'm assuming I'm not the only person who can navigate on a map, WITHOUT, having to turn it to the direction one is travelling? - seems silly because if its upside down, how the hell do you read the placenames?

placenames?

Actually rotating the map is a "plus" point.

Well okay, when your in the mountains it is, helps to reduce the even more confusing work of a compass workout.

But I havd and on occasion still rotate a map for driving, but it's not like left can be easily confused for right is it...

LOL! Thats what you think! :D

Co-driver "sharp right through gate"

Driver "which way is it?"

Co-driver "RIGHT!!"

Driver (heading leftish) "what over here?"

Co-driver "RIGHTTTTT !!! through the gate!"

Driver (rolling down window to ask a marshal) "Which way is it?"

How we (er - they) got through that gate is still a mystery to me ...
