Long splits

Featured Replies

I have long splits in between the tread pattern of my Dunplop tyres on my Octy, they go round the entire circumferance. Would this be considered as dangerous?

not sure what you mean, have you any pics?

I had this problem with the Dunlops on my previous Octy.I have also seen the same on other Dunlop shod Octys.

I got rid of mine before they wore out because they were very poor in the wet.

I can get pics, they are in the rain channels, the rubber has cracked.

In the channels or around the edge of the tread blocks, I think I'd replace them for piece of mind. At the end of the day a lot of force goes through the tyres so if they are cracking then better safe than sorry as a sudden loss of pressure could be fatal.

How old are the tyres. If they are fairly new I'd consider taking them back to the retailer and complaining.

Cheers, this seems to be everyones views, I have spoken to. They are 2 yrs old.

Perhaps its the 'terrible two's' syndrome. I will never buy Dunplops after this, they have been like it for ages. Dunplop will probably wriggle out of it saying I have run them under inflated.

Wife had a car with factory fitted Continentals on. Now they do crack after 3yrs plus!!

gonna get 4 Falken ZE912 to replace

Try and get the Falken FK452 instead as I've not heard great things about the ZE912.

Not sure if that's improved as they have been bedded in mind.

If you don't want grip above all else, then michelin pilot primacy HP are apparantly quite good and wear pretty well too.

I did some research and bought the FK 452's cheers

Just be a bit careful for the first couple of hundred miles as the release compound takes a little while to wear off :)

Take some fine sandpaper and when the guy's doing the balancing ask him to rub it against the thread.

That way most of the slippery stuff is already gone by the time the wheel is on the car and the mrs. can drive it safely.

don't they cost more than the national debt though? :D

Cracks like you describe are usualy caused by several things, age ie more than 4 years old ,inflation incorrect and sun exposure or all of these.plus have heard of just lack of use where the tyre does not get warm enough to expand so cracking comes about.

Ps replace soon as possible.

I only have a 1.9TDi, it couldn't pull a skin off a rice pudding lol. I drive nicely, so won't be pushing on, well for the first few hundred miles at least - thanks everyone for your help.

£70 a corner fitted and they last well so not really

thats what I like to hear about the 452's. How many miles have done so far in them, and how much tread is remaining?

Did you pursue Dunplop in trying to claim some money back off them?

Ill have to check up on that but im about 12,000 in and theres plenty left. The gsd3's I had on before didnt last much longer than that and turned into wailing sirens on the back of the car :(

nope, couldnt be arsed as they had also worn on the inside as well. dealer wasnt interested and just wanted to charge me £100+ for a laser alignment

You could just issue a small claims court notification for 50% of the cost of 50% of the new tyres as you got 2 years use (usual is 4) perhaps and if they don't pay up they decide if you want to take it to court or not.

I'm running a second set of 452 and while i mostly do motorway miles I got about 30k out of the first pair after rotation. This was mostly m/way miles mind but did include some making progress on the twisties.

Another one to suffer with longditudinal splits here as well.

Took one tyre in for a repair after getting a puncture with a screw to be told "sorry can't repair it it's cracked". Went to have a look and all 4 have had it, the front two MUCH worse than the backs, with cracks virtually all the way round. Needless to say I will NOT be buying Dunlops again!

After reading of many problems with Dunlops on this forum I told the salesman that I didn't want Dunlops when I ordered my vRS. Of course when it finally arrived it had Dunlops on it, but the salesman simply swapped wheels with another new vRS he had in stock so I ended up with Michelins - Result :)
