No! Not the dreaded turbo whistle!!

Featured Replies

Just turned 83k in my vrs now and since last week have developed a whistle between 1000 and 1800 rpm. It is the same whether on light or heavy acceleration and has gradually got louder since last week.

However, once the engine has warmed up it's not as loud and sounds normal.

I have searched the numerous threads on the turbo whistle and appreciate that it's a common characteristic. However, I've yet to read a thread which cites the whistling on low rpm and which then goes away when the engine's warm. i.e. People either cite the whistling on engine idle (which then goes away with a blip of the throttle), or is normally heard when booting it.

I will check the pipes for leaks as a first step, though I haven't noticed any loss of power.

Should I be preparing myself for the worst?

People's comments and experiences are appreciated as ever!

Thanks,

Dave

Id reckon it would be a pipe or hole in intercooler?

good luck

Whistle at those revs isn't abnormal.

As you've said check all the pipes and if you're worried have the thing taken off and serviced. If there is a problem and you spot it early you can have your turbo reconditioned and not risk engine or exhaust damage.

Mine whistles at idle, continues to whistle upto about 2k rpm where it turns into a whoosh, then it warbles when I come off the power/change gear. Sounds even better with the windows down :D

Worried not one bit :)

Just checked the pipes now and didn't find anything amiss. Revved the engine a bit and it seems to be coming from the turbo. As I say, no performance / power loss yet, but I'm still concerned about the noise. I guess there's no real way to check it without taking it off?

It might be wise to put together some prices in case of the worst. Do people normally replace the turbo by itself, or with the intercooler? Also, can anyone recommend a good supplier for the garrett turbo?

Just the turbo can be replaced. No reason at all to swap the SMIC as well, unless you have cause to suspect it's also failing.

See a few of our site partners for Garrett prices; Derv Doctor springs to mind for example. They might be able to supply you with a standard, but superior, Garrett PD130 turbo perhaps (GT1749VA).

Mines whistles really loud... Bothered... Not lol!!

If it goes bang it goes bang :)

Mine whistles, notice it much more at low revs/speed.

Doesnt seem to affect the car, so not worried about it.

RBW.

mine whistles pretty loud aswell, I actually quite like it lol and it hasnt missed a beat :D

mine whistles away happily as well, no loss of power/performance.

I like the noise, lets people know its spooling and i'm gonna go past lol lol lol :)

If it goes bang it goes bang :)

I hope it does!

Didn't think the turbo spooled up until 1700-1750RPM,

so would i be right in saying it won't be the turbo at that low level of acceleration?

I hope it does!

little bit harsh eh?

/\ playground stuff... Im still insistent my dads the hardest

/\ playground stuff... Im still insistent my dads the hardest

in that case!!!

my dads car is so much faster than your dads!!!!:cool:

Why dont you just say mines bigger than yours have a happy slap on each other and then kiss and make up !

I had the Whistle before having my new turbo with pipes fitted under warranty a year ago due to a generic map that killed it. If in doubt take it in to Skoda and just get them to check it they dont charge a penny to just look at it dude so it will put your mind at ease or atleast let you know you wont be going out on a saturday night for a while lol

ok thanks for everyone's comments so far. I'm going to get a second opinion on it and will go from there.

Since the original KKK turbo went pop and was replaced by the vastly superior Garrett turbo, the whistle has been noticable by it's absence.Maybe the whistle produced by the KKK was an indicator of it's imminent demise.;)

dont say that! NOW i'm on a major panic...........cheers....................

Does it help your theory that my uprated Garrett whistles along nicely, and more so than my previous KKK?

Whistle, on its own, is not an indicator of imminent or certain turbo failure.

:)

My first one whistled since new, so has the second one, I wouldn't worry too much.

PHEW! Thanks guys! :)
