Secondary Air System removal

Featured Replies

Just spotted this: Forge Motorsport | Alloy Fabrication

I was planning on making my own plate, as nobody ever seems to talk about removing the secondary air system. But since forge make one....

My mate with an EVO VIII has done this aswell, so it must be good!

As far as I can see the job involves:

-Blank off hole in filter box

-Blank off hole on cylinder head (with forge plate), after removing the combination valve

-Remove secondary air pump, 2 long black plastic hoses & engine mount bracket

-Remove N112 from the vacuum system, which controls the combination valve

-Remove the relay from the relay box in the engine bay

-Job done

I'm just wondering if having 2 connectors not connected (to pump & to N112), will cause any lights to come on the dash?

I guess I could remove the relay/connectors now, and see if it kicks up anything.

The pump is purely for cold start emissions, to warm the cat up faster. So passing an MOT/roadside check will still be fine and legal.

I just hate that stupid pump! Whirring away pointlessly, getting in the way of the oil filter... I swear it looked at me funny the other day. It's got to go!

Surley someone has done this? I'm sure the early (cable throttle) 1.8T's didn't even have secondary air.....

I thought it was important to have the secondary air pump working to prolong the life of the cat?

Ok, so basically if you want to do it properly you need a new ECU, that you can reprogram.

Nothing to d with prolonging the life of the cat, it just means it wont be working properly when the engine is cold.

so if you go Decat route it can come out anyway? from past experience running on LPG the emissions are usually much lower so you can pass MOT without the Cat.

If you decat the secondary air injection system is pointless.

Im not running either.

Did this on my mk2 20v i built.

May do it to my octy if i decide to run a decat.

That's awesome mate!

Did you delete the evap system aswell?

Yep the evap system went into the bin with the rest of the bits.

Hey Mr Bodge - did you ever do this?

Just scanned my car and I have:

16795 - Secondary Air Injection System: Incorrect Flow Detected

P0411 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Which might be an excuse for removal :D Especially as I plan to de-cat. No emissions checks here :D

Mr Rob! No I never did anything about this, but I've strangely been looking into this again this week. I wish the AUQ was like the AGU (1 lambda sensor, cable throttle, no 2nd air, no VVT, no N112, no N245, no suction spray pump, no crap).

I may have missed the point or post but what advantage is there to taking the system out?

If it isn't there it can't go wrong! Cleans up the engine bay giving you more room. Simplifies the vacuum system. Removes possible air leaks. Gets rid of the noise and lumpy running while the valve on the head is open. Saves weight! Or maybe it's just some engine OCD thing, and that simple is better when it comes to non-vital systems.

It's not a power thing, just a housekeeping job.

  • 1 year later...

is there anyone out there who fancies doing this job on mine to bin all those ugly stoopid things?!

Do you have to have a de-cat for this to work ?

ant

Ive got the blanking plate and got some resistor's to go in air pump and n112 valves places or i have when i find them,

When i find them air pumps going in bin, drives me nuts that thing wirring under bonnet,

If you get a remap you can have the pump and N112 mapped out, so you wont have to touch any wiring or resistors, just unplug the cables. That's what Shark will do for me when I do mine.

Mine should be getting ripped out on Sunday B) The SAI makes the car sound like a diesel on a cold start
