Will the older type Locks/Ignition replace the newer type?

Featured Replies

I've got a late 98 Felicia with various door locks that don't work (all that works now is the ignition key in the ignition)

I have sourced a full set of locks but they are the earlier type (serrated edge key type). Does anyone know if they will fit the later car.

I'm not overly concerned if the ignition one can't be replaced.

I think the locks can be replaced and you'll just need to put the immobiliser chip in the new ignition key.

Someone who has replaced said part or stripped Felicias will know mre about this than me though.

even if they are two different lock types? (Not going to hold you to it :-) )

AFAIK The Felicis is cheap and cheerful so the old locks could prob be retrofitted/bodged on :D

Found These On Ebay which might be worth a look.

When you say the locks won't work? do you mean the central locking has buggered or the key doesnt turn in the barrel?

My passenger lock was becoming a little difficult but I WD40'd all the locks last week and they seem to be fine.

yeah that's what I had sourced :-)

When we got the car we had,

1 key for the ignition.

1 key for driver door

Neither of which worked in the passger/petrol cap/boot :-)

Now the barrel of the driver door has a broken arm so it can't actuate that lock. The central locking module is still working - labouring but working.

The badge perception was my security device.

You should be able to replace that on it's own then :) So long as the lock still turns, and doesn't spin all the way around I think you'll be ok.

Another option is to install some sort of remote system to control the central locking. This sort of functionality can be provided by an alarm system - I think you need one that provides lock and unlock ground wires. You can also get a remote control ad-on for central locking something like Car Remote Control f Keyless Central Locking Kit HT-188 on eBay, also Other Security Electrical, Security Electrical, Car Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 25-Oct-08 14:15:48 BST)

Thought about that - remote locking, but since my boot remains unlocked I reckon I really should do something about that.

Looking at the parts catalogue I can't tell for certain, although the door locks pre 1/98 and 1/98 onwards have different trim rings, although the doors are the same. So long as you have the round trim rings that fit on the outside (which will be separate to the locks) I think you won't have any issues fitting them.

Edit: just noticed the actual lock mechanisms are different (the bit you see when the door is open) although the bit that connects the lock barrel to the lock mechanism is the same. Not sure if old lock barrel would work with new lock mechanism.

It looks like the ignition barrel should be swappable, as only the barrel is different (but see Captain Sisko's post re:swapping transponder in key over).

The tailgate has different what they describe as "joint plate lever for hood lock" for pre 1/98 models. Not sure exactly what that is but it looks like it is separate to the lock mechanism and connects directly to it. Part number is 092838036A for pre 98 and 6U0827631 for 98 onwards.

This is based on looking at what parts are different in the catalogue and not practical experience though.

Once you have the door cards/tailgate trim etc off the locks simply remove by pulling off the push rod and sliding a plate across that is behind them. The most difficult bit with the doors is removing the door lock guard. Have known of someone smashing it to pieces to remove it - but if you are careful and squeeze it you can manoeuvre it out but it isn't easy and will take ages. All it does is stop the old coat-hanger down the side of the window trick to unlock the doors anyway.

The boot doesnt lock?

The boot lock isnt linked to the central locking, I leave mine locked and use the handle by the drivers seat.

nope.. I don't have a key to lock it, permanently unlocked

You should be able to remove the inner cover from the back of the tailgate and permanently lock it, then use the handle by the drivers seat.
