Virgin Internet Issues

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I'm living in a unilet - All 6 people in the house have computers and all connect to the internet.

The problem we are having is that randomly we all keep on being chucked off.

I have a feeling this maybe this could be the router? It's an ADSL line with the Extra Large 20mb package that's wireless - So any ideas guys. (It also seems to be alot worse when it rains)

I have the same package at home - No issues. The only difference is the router.

Home - Netgear (Rangemax)

Uni - Standard Netgear router.

So folks - Any Ideas? :D

Many thanks,

Rob

When you say chucked off, is that from connecting to the internet, or the router, or both? Are you hard wired into the router, or connecting wirelessly?

Sorry Steve it has been a v.long day.

- It's Both! Connecting to the internet + the router!

All housemates are connecting wirelessly - Would it be better if I linked my laptop to the router via a cable?

Cheers for the quick reply Steve.

It's odd that the router's connection through the phone line *and* the wireless connection internally to the router should go at the same time. What do the status lights on the router do when it all goes pear shaped?

Wireless Symbol is a SOLID GREEN -Normally Flashes...

Power light - Also SOLID GREEN - So no changes

'I' Symbol - Still flashes - No problems..

No Orange lights or issues. When router is re-set computers all pick up the internet - Then breaks again soon after.

:o

Coincidentaley there were some network issues on wednesday. Probably not related but a power cut in one of the offices and backup failure meant no network, no billing system, nothing. It was customer affecting but not sure how wide spread!

Which model Netgear is it Rob? And then check if there's any firmware updates available for it.

When the connection drops, can a machine connected wirelessly to it still get a ping response from the router? And also check the same from a wired machine.

Steve

Hm, interesting. I had an issue with a netgear a while back where it would do similar - that was a DG834GT and was eventually fixed by a firmware update. It sounds like the issue is purely wireless if the phone link light is staying active throughout. The wireless light on those (I think) stays solid normally if there's a connection to a wireless client and flashes to signify data transfer.

Using a cable is always a good troubleshooting step to start with. It's not inconceivable that you have something outside interfering with it, so the usual steps of running netstumbler and changing channels if necessary are always handy. You may need to try netstumbler on a couple of laptops if it doesn't pick anything up, as some wireless chipsets seem reluctant to work with it. I would also suggest making sure any turbo wireless modes are off and that it's set to 54mbps by default, as those can make interference issues much worse and harder to trace.

Disconnecting/line noise when it rains is a classic symptom of a damaged cable outside the house - I think it has something to do with stray capacitance, but don't quote me on that :) However that'd cause the ADSL link to drop and shouldn't affect the wireless connections between your laptops and the router.

Sound like the router is locking up. It's not unknown for them to be affected by Capacitor Plague- I've had one go that way at work. Can you borrow your home router?

However, like Interphase says, the rain thing could be water in a cable joint of your BT line. Does the phone go crackly at the same time?

Def sounds like the router

It sounds like something I've seen at my uncles house and he has a cheap wireless-b router.

Normally they have a Wii and his PC connected Wirelessly.

On this day my cousin was playing Wii online, my uncles was playing poker on his pc then I signed on msn I think a laptop might also have been on too.

The results? 1 person would get kicked off so first I would then my uncle then the Wii but could connect afterwards.

The circle stopped after I turned my PDA off.

I just phoned Virgin – They stated that the only area in Bournemouth affected was BH17 – I’m BH11. Thanks for the idea, that would have made sense.

It’s possible to ping from the wired machine – No such luck from wireless!

:(

It’s a (get ready to be impressed) – WGR614 v9!

It mentions that “The router automatically checks for firmware updates after the login process” :(

The Cable outside was already pre-installed from the previous students at the house. –The phone line only takes incoming calls!

Thanks for the idea with “Netstumbler” – I will give that a go if needs be. Guess what – The internet and router is all working fine today?!?! It must have to be the router.

I know your pain. I get what your telling me to do –

During my last message I was on hold with Virgin.

I stated my issues and they are going to be doing a line check ASAP. I have asked them to contact me once done - Then it could potentially mean if it isn't the line it's the router.

Tbh - I Was impressed with the phonecall and service I got today. Just a little hint for virgin... Blitzing this lady down the phone at me full volume does hurt!

YouTube - Alicia Keys - No One

You didn't stop with that noise though did you - Oh no... YouTube - Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music

Followed by YouTube - Amy Winehouse Back to Black

All three tracks on loop! What ever happend to the classical music! :(

What? no Green Sleeves?
