Recommendations for Digital Photo Frames

Featured Replies

I'm considering one. I have that many photos saved away, it seems like a good way of seeing them.

Anyone bought one they'd recommend?

Cheers,

Stee

Stay away from cheap!

Cheap usually means... well... cheap and nasty!

I was in pc world recently and they had a load of them out and working... maybe go and have a look at which you like... there's some really good ones with crisp clear screens.

Alternatively if you're not too fussed about the image not been too clear then Wilkinsons are doing a black Texet one for £29.99! (Don't know what the quality etc is like though!)

I beleive BT do a range of digital photo frames IIRC and quite nicely priced as well.

Very true Alex - as ever, you get what you pay for :)

Like the look of that Sony one, and TBH - that was less than I was expecting.

Steve,

we have a philips one and are pleased with it.

One thing i would say,go for one bigger than you wanted as they do look smaller than you think. We have a 9" (i'm not boasting!) and glad we didn't go for anything smaller.

There's also a nine inch version in the same design.

They also do a nice split screen mode with a clock and picture which looks good.

Cheers guys.

Jay - you got a model number for it?

Steve

Steve, if you want a Sony one, let me know :)

One thing to remember about them is that the cheaper ones have a much lower resolution screen.

The more modern and serious jobs like the Phillips one has a proper 800x480 resolution lcd screen.

Other point to bear in mind - what aspect ratio? Point and shoot cameras shoot at 4:3 aspect ratio whereas 35mm film and digital SLR shots are the proper 3:2 ratio. So if your shots a predominantly one format and the screen is the other, you won't get the most out of it and have black bars on the side or top/bottom.

There is a Sony Bluetooth model but it's rather pricey. The traditional ones which take memory stick / compact flash / SD are quite reasonable. 9 inch model has 750x480 resolution. 7 inch model has 800x480 resolution. They also have some features like HDMI out so you can connect to TV for viewing your photos on the big screen and have a built-in memory of 512MB so you don't have to leave your media in there - it can copy them automatically to the onboard memory and resize them to normal hd resolution to save space :)

Cheers guys.

Xav - photos would all be from digital cameras, none scanned or anything. Would be a mixture of 350D shots, Lumix (TZ-3) and probably some older ones cropping up; my old Nikon Coolpix 885 springs to mind.

Thanks for the info. A BT one would have its benefits, sure, as would a WiFi enabled one. But I'll wait for technology to move on a bit and the prices to come down :D

For the frame to take traditional media would be fine. Would likely leave a 2Gb SD/CF card in there. Not fussed about output either, big screen photos is what a media centre PC and/or PS3 are for

I am also looking to get a Sony 7" (DPFD70B) one, the best price i have seen them so far is £79.99 with free p&p from Play.com

One point to be aware of is that a large number of cheap Chinese digital photo frames were found earlier this year to have been deliberately infected with a Trojan which collected and forwarded passwords etc.

The brand in question was Isignia, but others may have been involved.

The recommendation is only to buy a known, reputable brand. In this case it appears that cheap meant getting something for nothing - that you didn't want!!!!

Cheers, definitely worth knowing about and something that had passed me by. Certainly concerning

Looking likely that it'll be either a Philips or Sony...

Steve

Xav, if you're looking could you have a look at prices for the D70 7" and also the 9" version of it and drop me a PM when you've got time?

And for me please :D

I'd seen a Philips one on Amazon earlier too, which seemed to have a decent spec and positive reviews:

We've got that phillips one. Very good image quality but it's a bit picky about the files. It doesn't like anything that I've run though photoshop. I've never had time to get to the route of the problem.
