FMIC - How big is yours?

Featured Replies

What size are the FMICs people have fitted, as I am trying to find something to fit......

Thanks

Fabby

Mine's a Whopper, well Forge actually.

Dont think theres any running custom ones??

There are plenty to choose from

Forge FMIC

Pro Alloy

SeatSport kit (largest)

And i believe theres a new one in production ;) - which i like the look of ;)

Allard do them also

Biggest doesn't mean best....

Well, when FMICs are involved anyway ;)

What size are the actual intercoolers in these kits?

Here is the Seat Sport one on my old Ibiza TDi

Can the seat sport FMIC fit the Fartbia without modding the crash bar?

The Allard performs fine for me, as well as providing a little extra engine bay bling.

Old pics these though. Not quite got the same lustre now (works just as well though :D)

And tucks behind the vRS bumper well too

I know that the forge FMIC is around £700 big ones is there anyone else out there that does them anycheaper?

Always worth ringing Forge and mentioning Briskoda. Or they have a section on here as they're a site sponsor.

Steve

the most important thing is the area of the internal heat exchange surface.

Forge (and others) have theirs with star-shaped internal tubes to maximise heat exchange.

Cheaper ones even much larger just don't work as well to move the heat.

My mates crash bar needed a bit of chopping - dont know if its possible though

I'd also consider pressure drop, air velocity, air flow and inlet/outlet temps :)

(Forge runner :))

In the US lots of the MK4 Golf owners simply uprate the SMIC for a more efficient item, is there anything like that availiable in the UK for the Polo platform?

Not that I've seen. The only uprated SMIC that springs to mind is for the Audi TT, which is probably the same as the Golf Mk4 you mention. Not sure if this would be compatible and able to fit the Fabia though.

Steve

I think there's not a SMIC out there that could even reach half the capability of one reasonable FMIC. :)

True - but you do have the issue of how well someone is going to utilise an FMIC.

I think with a vented arch and std SMIC, a stage-1 remapped car is likely to perform better overall, than one that has an FMIC fitted to a car running the same spec.

When you get to the stage of larger turbos and beyond, that's where they show their worth

I have done something to my SMIC that doesn't seem to have been mentioned before. I have attached a great big fan to the rear of it. Came off a CBR600 radiator. I have it wired onto (via a relay) a blue button on my dash. It really brings down the intake temperature and drastically speeds up recovery time. Anyone else ever put a fan on it? I still have to do the wheel arch mod to really finish it off.

and where are the pictures and the step by step DIY guide and the before and after dyno maps, fuel consumption numbers, 0-60 times measured on an accellerometer, in-gear times...

Really, you must try harder. ;)

Sounds good but without the wheel arch mod the hot air has nowhere much to go as you mentioned. You'll also get an extra bit of brake cooling on that side.

When you come to do the wheel arch mod, have a look at the front of the SMIC. When I changed to the FMIC the old intercooler was clogged solid with dead insects, the mummified corpse of a (feathered) bird and all kinds of other 5h1te.

I had asked about logging boost temp with vagcom but haven't got around to doing it. **** poor I know.

I clean my SMIC with the hose every time I wash the car and usually give it good does of degreaser and other cleaning products.

My idea came from Smart cars which have a fan on their intercooler, but a Smart fan didn't fit so I went hunting for something that would.

My car has done 41k miles... would cleaning the intercooler out improve its efficieny?

Definitely worth casting an eye over it, to see what state it's in...
