(lack of) Underbonnet Insulator in Petrol Turbos

Featured Replies

Our AUSspec turbo Octavias (1.8T elegance & 2.0T vRS) don't have an underbonnet insulator pad/sheet fitted but the diesels do (and possibly the 2.0NA).

Can anyone think of a valid reason (besides saving a few dollars at the assembly line) why the two petrol turbo models wouldn't have one?

I had one supplied by my dealer prior to delivery as I thought the underbonnet area looked unfinished and I was concerned about the affect of the engine heat on the bonnet paint.

Apart from a possible rise in underbonnet temperatures (which may be an issue if I lived up Queensland way or Darwin) I can't see any reason not to fit it.

Your thoughts?

Diesels are more noisy and they're trying to suppress it a bit?

Another thought popped in: Maybe they're trying to keep underbonnet temperature higher so the engine would warm up a bit faster. It's disastrous driving with cold diesel engine and those Pump Düse engines take years to warm up properly.

Idno...I was just guessing... :D

That's exactly why they are used. Diesels take forever to heat up, and as heat rises, fitting insulation above the engine is a good way of keeping the said heat in there for longer.

We used to get them in the UK on the petrol engines but then they stopped it.

I'd love one on my FSI as well. Takes forever to heat up, and by the time it does I'm already where I need to be, and won't be using the car for another hour or so.

Surely its possible to buy the diesel model's insulator and the appropriate clips and attach them to the petrol model?

I imagine its a cost/weight saving issue - if they can get away with deleting it, then they will.

Mine (early 2006 car), has it aswell.

Yes, it's possible. Or do what I did. Go to a nearest hardware / mixed stuff store and buy some heat insulation intended for boat engine compartment. The stuff comes in different thickness'. It has a heat shielding on other side and sticky tape on the other.

I have some 30mm thick insulation under my cars bonnet. Doesn't do much for the sound but the engine stays warmer A LOT longer after engine off and also heats up much faster when starting from cold.

That's what I've done. $110. Fits like a charm and doesn't appear to have any detrimental effects. It's only Spring at the moment but we've had a couple of warm days (35c+) and nothing seems amiss. The reason I ask is that others on another forum are doing the old "The manufacturer knows best & a kitten will die if you change anything" chorus. It got me thinking & doubting, so decided to ask here where there is a lot more collective knowledge.

My FSI 1.6 does not come with it too, it was new a 2 months ago. When I pop up the Bonnet I was amazed no pad there! All the past cars have always had them... Not good for paint I guess too plus will make a the engine noisy without it right? But any proof of that from people that have it? Will it turn my Skoda into a Audi in lack of noise....

James.

Re: 2008 Model Naked Bonnet ??

My 2007 vRS is naked too.

It is easy and cheap to retrofit sound proof, I will do it in a week

Part numbers are:

1Z0863831 - sound proof

The cost of a set (proof+clips) is about 20-30 GBP
