Featured Replies

Oh, and just for comedy value, I've learned first hand that these are not quite as quick as a mildly fettled 328i

you can take the boy out of the fabia.............................

Yup can confirm as someone who works for Volkswagen... this is official. Those are the prices, feel sorry for those people with one on order as they have signed the deal and won't get the lower price.

Not many left now!

I really wish I had the cash to spare as these prices are sooo tempting. This car will be a future classic to in my opinion. However this is a very expensive car to insure tax and run and, despite having one of the finest sounding engines currently in production, is always going to play second fiddle to the GTI which is almost as quick and cheaper to run and insure. I think I might have a terrible shock if I sold the Fabia VRS and bought one of these.

Curiosity got the better of me so popped into local VW dealership and by chance they have an R32 in the showroom with pretty much all the toys inc DSG, Sunroof, MF Steering Wheel etc. in Met Grey. Up in the showroom for £22,995 but I reckon armed with the info from here could be slashed to sub £20k ............................. hmmmm :rubchin:

It's a whole lot of car Steve and they are 'keen' to get rid of them.

I dread to think what one would do to the gallon if driven in a spirited fashion.

Having said that Milltek do an exhaust for one and I bet it sounds sweet.

Yep, we have one that lives just up the road from us and when he drives past with the stock tubes on it sounds lovely. I have heard one with a Milltek and it is awesome.

Lovely sound indeed.

Ive been driving around a multistorey carpark today in my R32

The full price is worth paying alone for the engine noise

and yes even though it was cold i had the windows open:)

With that sort of saving you'll not need to worry about mpg for a long long time, the increase in VED is paid for too effectively.

I test drove one before deciding on the 130i and i must say it was nice!

The things that put me off was the running cost. like someone mentioned before, top tax band £400 per year and rising! Low 20's mpg...

I assume thats why VW have stopped making it as there simply is no demand and I assume the V6 3.2 engine will no longer be supplied in VW/Audi's in the near future! Shame as it's a peach of an engine with a sound to die for!

I think the Beemer would be my choice as well espcially as, with the 135i turbo engne at least BMW hve engineered it to be just under the punishment threshold of 225 g/km. Ford have done the same with the Focus ST as well. I think both are at 224g/km. Shows there are good, thinking engineers out there. The R32 with a manual box which I would have (god knows how much a DSG would cost to fix) puts out 257g/km. THis means that nobody will run one as a company car and there is also a lot of competition from Ford and Beemer at the R32s level not to mention the Golf GTI:D America has taken to the R32 though and even their boggo Golf (Rabbit what a stupid name) has a 170bhp 2.5 litre inline 5. Their cars are engineered to produce less smog and despite Gore's rantings, CO2 is not a taxable emission and is not give much thought. Think its time to move to the States. I hope that these kind of thing doesn't lead to the death of the big V6 and V8. That would be a sad world:(

Worth bearing in mind that the 3.0 turbo petrol isn't available in the 1-Series hatch... not yet anyway. Available in the coupe and convertible though?!

The 130i is a more direct comparison with the R32's 3.2 V6 anyway, with the BMW unit putting out 265bhp, but only 197g/km. I think that's a cracking effort personally, and makes the Golf's CO2 output look even worse!

Steve

The Germans are doing really well, i couldnt believe it when i saw the new Golf Bluemotion was under 100g/km for a 1.6 diesel with decent performance figures.

Yes but have driven a SEAT Leon ECOmotive based on the old Bluemotion and the gearing was way too high, it meant that you couldn't really get out of third in town.:( While this may produce great CO2 figures in the test cycles it ruins the flexibility and driving experience.
