Help!

My other half wants a slim digital camera for xmas.

I doubt it will be used much so only realy want to spend about £70-100.

I have looked around but I don't have too much knowledge about cameras

I seem to remember optical zoom and megapixels are the two things to look for.

Can anyone recommend a decent camera for my budget?

Or even what spec to look for?

Cheers Luke

Hi Anonymouse, Good to speak again!

Last January I was buying the Samsung S630 for Soviet junior. I like this one because it is very good for battery power, but is not slim line also.

I think that samsung are the very good brand name for cameras, and even with not so high mega pixels, the quality is so very good. As the new models are coming all of the time, then I would also buy the slimline.

I have used Canon SLR for 30+ years also never without a Fuji Finepix digital for instant shots , try search on this website link below

try this link Digital Camera Selector

always ask the better half whats she wants from a camera

I bought a Canon Ixus 50 a couple of years ago from the Canon Outlet store on Ebay.

Highly recommend both the Ixus series (model 75 looks to be the current one) and this Ebay seller - you can get a lot more camera for your money if you don't mind a slightly tatty box etc

I'm pretty sure others on here have bought from this Ebay stoe and have been equally impressed.

If you can stretch the budget a bit , Ricoh Digital - Ricoh Caplio R7 is excellent with a much better optical zoom than other slim cameras

Just be aware if you get a Fuji or a Sony, you'll be using either XDCard or Memorystick. I think the latter isn't so much an issue, but XDCard is probably a bit more limited in size / availability. It can be an issue if you want to share your photos or get them printed.

Also, higher megapixel count isn't the be all and end all of which camera is better. Compacts have very small lenses so I'd argue that the actual quality of the picture is not necessarily dictated by the MP count. All the manufacturers play the numbers game :)

This looks like a good deal from Argos ...

That looks good. I don't mind spending a bit more if its going to be of a better quality. Seems to be a good price for the spec, not a well known brand to me though.

Do they have a good reputation?

Samsung NV40 £100 at Play.com

Try before you buy at that price range. We tried to get a cheap digi but it had to go back. Ended up spending close to £200 but was worth it in the end.

I'd recommend the Canon Ixus 75 if you can get it cheap enough. It was a Canon Ixus 70 that we got and it's still a cracking camera now.

I've just bought a sony T77 camera for random snaps. it's a very cool and ultra compact touchscreen camera but image quality is not the greatest.

I'd heartily recommend the Canon Ixus range. Consistently the better image quality amongst compact digital cameras.

This site has some good deals on just now:

I’ve got Canon Dslr’s and a Canon Digi compact, but probably my favourite camera in many ways was my Fuji F20 (until it got nicked). It was my second compact Fuji and I have loved both of them. They don’t do anything brilliantly (except low light photography…that’s the FujiFilm F20) but seem to do everything well. They are reasonably slim, easy to use, fairly rugged (I often had it in my pocket or bum bag at work, which is usually outdoors) and quick to start up and do its’ thing. The other nice thing is they tend to be quite cheap and you can get great deals on them. I would check out Dpreview for reviews on this sort of camera. It is a bit technical, but they have a summary/verdict page if you aren’t into the technicalities of photography.

One small thing to bare in mind, the more megapixels, the poorer the pictures tend to look in dim light and the more 'X Zoom' the camera has, the poorer the pictures look also. It is only a rough rule of thumb, but it is right about 95% of the time I reckon.

I have just had a look at the retailers on line and see Jessop’s have a nifty slider thing for helping pick a compact camera. Click on this Linky and then click Camera Selector on the top line. You can then move sliders to select the importance of things like thinness, colour, price and so on. Quite good really if it is for a gift.
