I am looking at getting a Octavia VRS however insurance is so high that I might not be able to. I got a quote at my house in Manchester and have been quoted £1600 cheapest on all comparison sites. This is with 7 years NCB and I am 24. Now if I get it at my parents house in Watford, this is cut to £700. How can there be such a difference in the price? Is it really just the postcode?

Simple answer: yes

My previous insurer stated that I had to be 25+ and have license for 2+ years for my VRS, maybe 25 is a cut off point for high to low (as some wont touch you till your 25 as my previous), try the comparison sites again but put your age to 25 with 8 yrs ncd (as if it was this time next year), see if it makes any significant difference, might be worth holding out for a year (or till your 25) if you can, and yes postcode makes a big difference.

Looking at the table my house is band F and my parents is band B, guess the postcode really does make a difference. I tried the sites with my age as 25 and 8 years NCB which is only in a few months away and it really didnt make a lot of difference. Guess I will have to move house lol

i ive in band A but shocked at some of the post codes that are in low that should be in high and vice versa.

It appears my SK14 post would indicate that I live in some sort of war zone! Where as my parents WD4 postcode is a holiday island in the caribbean!

I have been doing a few more quotes tonight and have noticed that if i changed the purchase date to a couple of months earlier, the quote goes down by £100. Why does this happen? Also adding parents as named drivers also helps. Have now managed to get it down to a more reasonable £850 with me at 24, 7 years NCB protected, 15,000 business miles.

If you have owned the car for a while it theroectially means that you have been driving it and parking it in you r usual manner and locations, and you have not had it stolen, or driven it in to a ditch/wall/other car etc. Therefore you are less of a risk, because you have a vague idea of the cars capabilities and the local chavs dont know hoe to get in to it. As for why adding older people as named drivers makes a difference I dunno that doenst make sense, but it works for me too.

It's possible insurers use a more complex system now. It's a good rough guide anyway I guess.

It seems a shame they base this on purely the first portion of the postcode, some places have large areas under the same first portion postcode, with areas that range from practically palacial to having rusted washing machines and a ford sierra carcass in the front garden.

Interesting list, would explain why our car insurance costs almost doubled when moving from Derby 72 ( to Birmingham 16 ("Refer"). That "refer" code sounds a little non-specific/ominous!!! Have thankfully since moved south into the "A" area of "Birmingham" before buying the vRS.

I just noticed my old postcode in Manchester is down as "refer" I assume this means "do not touch with a 10 foot pole." or just add a zero to the quote.

Mind you I can understand why!

Guess Im one of the lucky ones then, have my insurance with More Than, costing £361 fully comp, 2005 Octy vRS, £50 excess, 4 years no claims at 28 yrs old living in Colchester.

Postcode does make a hell of a difference - insurers will make statsitics based on accidents/theft/vandalisma in each area. These are constantly evaluated. The list provided above is presumably for one insurer, so will vary slightly depending on who you're with and their own experience of certain areas. However, it wont vary much as what is deemed a high risk area will inevitably be high risk to all insurers. It's just that they all have their own scale.

A general summing up - big cities = bad - especially if you live in a smaller numbered area. So B1 for example, S1, M1, that kind of thing. If you live near a notorious crime blackspot you'll probably also be affected.

I moved from a leafy green village in Norfolk to another one, and you'd never be able to tell the difference - but mine increased quite a bit. The one I moved to is marginally nearer the town we live by and so the crime rate and statistics were worse. Sometimes you'd never know by appearance of the area.

If yours goes up when you move, I'd ask the insurer what area code you've gone from and to and get them to elabroate as much as possible, so they justify the rise in price.

Whats your post code? I have an NP16 but my nearest shop is 9miles away and we have a 1km private drive which starts 2miles down a small single track lane from the nearest B road; Still a Band C :-( same as Bulwark (the Ghetto of Chepstow) lol.

Looks like I live in an "A Zone" too - which is rather handy.

I'm at that age where it is about as cheap as it ever will be for me to insure cars.

I'm 33, 16 years NCB, Totally clean license (never had a point on it).

To insure my vRS TFSI with protected no claims, £100 excess, guaranteed hire-car, legal protection etc is around the £500 mark.

I shudder at some of the quotes I see flying around with many a person having to pay nearly £1000 a year for insurance.

I say youre paying over the odds for that with your NCB
