rebuild/tune a standard shock??

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a set of spare used dampers (type with screwed cap) I would like to rebuild. I have done this to both my bikes (new springs and oil) which transformed them (diff kettle of fish i know). The question is, is it a sound plan, and if so what grade/type of oil will do the job?

why?

Because I cant get cheap dampers here in Spain. I slung on some rust free 2nd hand ones. Got me the MOT passed and a set of number plates, but they seem to lack damping. I dont know how many miles they have done, but I did notice on the old set that the oil was very thin (at least compared to motorcycle suspension I have rebuilt) which I assumed is due to 100k of use....

Im not 100% sure but even though your dampers have a screw on cap thats only to change the insert inside. The standard dampers use a mix of gas and oil and you cant open the standard insert up as its pressurised. Could be wrong though ive never stripped one down. Surely it would be cheaper to get a brand new set from here and ship them over.

As Ross said, try buying from elsewhere in the EU and it should not cost as much. As long as you choose an EU country then no import duty or tax should be payable because its collected at source.

Assuming it could be done, the cost of stripping the damper and rebuilding could cost more than a new imported one.

Thanks, seems sensible, just seems a shame to bin some rust free struts. Only thing wrong was one of the (threaded) caps unwound a bit and leaked fluid. When I stripped the shock I could undo it with my fingers, so the seals shouldnt be blown. Came apart like a motorbike fork which is why I thought of refilling it... ah well.

i took an old set apart last year. if you unscrew the seal holder, you can pull the whole damping rod and piston out of the outer tube. leaving you with just an outer full of oil.

in answer to your question. i have no idea what grade of oil is used, but i would love to know as it is indead a shame to waste a good set of dampers for the sake of a £12 bottle of oil.

If the oil leaks out then surely the seals are bust anyway? I assume it would just be something similar to hydraulic jack oil?

Dont think the seals will be blown as it was only leaking as the seal cap worked loose. I might try and pick up some light weight motorcycle fork oil (5w or less) and see how it feels. I could measure quantities and check for gas escaping etc when I empty the other strut. Not sure when I´ll get a chance. Day off tomoz, but no garage at the mo and rain forecasted.... and theres the alternator to remove and refurb, and the Fiesta I borrowed needs a service before I give it back (nowt for owt) , plus dont forget going to work....:finger: :(
