To all running de-cat pipes

Featured Replies

VERY few Fabia had Garretts.

Hmm...was it the early ones ?

I was considering a decat for mine.

But it's on 118k now...so not sure if it's worth it.

Map it properly for the decat and it should be fine.

^ same as, im on 122k and was fancyin one

how do you know if you have a Garrret or a KKK? I keep being told i have a garret but i am not sure.

Your turbo will have a metal plate on stating Garrett or KKK

how do you know if you have a Garrret or a KKK? I keep being told i have a garret but i am not sure.

It will be stamped on the turbo housing itself. They are an equivalent part though, so share the same part number on the parts systems. Its just the luck of the drawer.

I think it was just the first couple of months production that had KKKs, so if you are later than a 53 plate its almost certain yours is a KKK.

I have said all along that de-cat on a standard turbo is not good for it and so has jabba when i have spoke to them in the past, so sorry but it was bound to happen but im glad you posted this up so everyone else may realise.

Everybody says "It's not good for the turbo", but can anyone please give a scientific explanation for it please? I have heard "reduced back pressure" mentioned before, but how much back pressure does the CAT actually provide? Surely most of it is provided by the backbox, as that is the most restricitive part of the system?

Because there is so little back pressure, there's less slowing the turbo down, so it can over rev effectively.

It's strange, I was told by the chap that did my exhaust (Charlie @ Prospeed Cardiff - many people on here will vouch for his knowledge/ skills in the industry) upon mentioning the possible problems caused by a decat on the KKK turbo, that he could not forsee any problems. He said the backbox is the most restrictive part of the system, and that removing the CAT and leaving a sports backbox in place would not cause problems. He said that if coupled with a larger FMIC and/or "straight pipe boxless" system that some run on here that only then could problems occur.

I also asked on MKIV website and they said that decat would not impact on the turbo - they said boost is electronically controlled and that a decat would not lead to overboost.

I installed a boost gauge just to be safe - so I could keep an eye on what the turbo is up to.

It holds a steady 19psi according to my gauge, and very very very occasionally, when giving it WOT, will it hit 21psi, for a split second.

Yes boost is electroncially controlled but it can still spike to the point until the engine cuts it back throwing into "limp home mode" hence why it is not good for it, im just going to go with what the people that have spend ages tuning these cars say to be honest.

Taking the safe option here....and leaving mine alone ! :)

Mines is in my cupboard eagerly awaiting its friend.... the Stage 2 turbo :)
