Need a spare key

Recommended Posts

just picked up my Octy mk1 L&K which only has one key, which works fine with the remote central locking and immobiliser (no alarm).

whats the cheapest / easiest way to get a new key made up, that also works remotely with the locking and immobiliser?

as losing the only key is in the long run a far more expensive strategy and a pain in the butt too!

i am up in Edinburgh, and do not have vag com :)

Might be somewhere on the net that can do it mail order if you send your key to them? Obvious problem is you're without a key until you get them back and are reliant on royal mail not losing it.

so is one plan to buy another compatible fob off ebay, get a copy of the key itself cut and replace it in the ebay fob, and then get the auto diagnostics guy to re-programme the new fob with the immobiliser code from the old fob?

if this is possible,

1) how do i know which key fob is compatible?

2) can any locksmith make a copy of the key part (like Timpsons on the highstreet), as the the fob is one of those flick out types, so do i need an automative locksmith instead?

thanks :)

right, so having searched about on ebay etc

i can get the top half of the key for £5-10 on ebay, which has the blank metal key, and transponder chip in it. Which i can then get cut at Timpsons for £5. This bit only needs programmed by the car itself, by putting the original key in the ignition, the new key in the door and then doing a little routine with the buttons to assign the key to the remote central locking. Which i think is on a member here's website iirc ?

skoda dealer said they can regrogram the immobiliser part for £40.

so all i need to do is figure out which fob code is compatible with my car. i asked the dealer what fob code i need, which i will have to wait for, possibly for forever! so any help identifying what code fob i need for the immobiliser would be fabulous! :)

There are basically two types of immobilisers which may be fitted on your car.

Immobiliser 2 or 3. Read the Ross-Tech site on how to determine which type you have fitted.

The chip in the top part of the key is not locked with immobiliser 2 but it is with immobiliser 3.

If the keyfob you buy off ebay has been used with immobiliser 3 then the chip in the top part of the keyfob will need to be replaced.

For the remote part of the key, as a quick guide you need to buy one with the same number of buttons, if you current one has 2 buy one with 2, if it has 3 buy one with 3.

Do not buy any keyfobs from the USA because they use a different frequency.

The chips and all bits can also be purchased from Hickleys :: Welcome to Hickleys - HomePage

If you need to replace the chip there is a small screw underneath the badge on the keyfob so you need to remove the badge carefully to remove the screw.

Hope this helps

Thanks Dougal, thats very useful :)

I had a look on the ross-tech site and couldnt find a page to help determine which i have. do you have a link :pants:

can i buy any 2 button fob off ebay, and then just buy the correct transponder for ~£4 from Hickleys? thus illiminating the problem of compatibility.

i have seen a fob with

code: HLO 1JO 959 753 CT

FREQ 434 MHz

will this one work? what is the UK frequency?

EDIT:

I found this info on an ebay auction, it seems logical, but i cannot guarentee its accuracy obviously!

from what i have gathered, 434MHz is the correct frequency. I need a 2 fob remote, from years 2000-04.

So my code is: HLO 1J0 959 753 AG

Hope this helps others.

HLO IJO 959 753 A - All vw's from 1997 - 2000. HLO 1JO 959 753 N is usable and supercedes the older oval key used previously!

HLO 1J0 959 753 AG - vw golf's only 2000-2004. HLO 1JO 959 753 CT now supercedes the older part number hlo 1jo 959 753 AG.

HLO 1JO 959 753 AH - vw passat's/bora's generally. HLO IJO 959 753 DA supercedes the older AH.

HLO 1JO 959 753 CT - newer vw transporters vans. Also many of the newer vehicle's including the skoda/seat's (SUPERCEDES THE AG)

HLO 1JO 959 753 DA - vw polo's and some vw passat's. Also compatable with other models (skoda/seat's)

HLO 1J0 959 753 G - vw caddy vans . Now widely in use on a number of vehicle's as also supercedes HLO 1K0 959 753

HLO 1KO 959 753 - vw golf's/touran 2004 onwards. Now superceded by the HLO 1KO 959 753 G

7M3 959 753 - vw,s sharan's,alhambras, etc only. Now superceded by the 7M3 959 753 F

HLO 2EO 959 753 A - vw/merc crafter vans etc only

PLEASE NOTE ;- THE SEAT, SKODA KEYS & PART NUMBERS ARE THE SAME SO INTERCHANGABLE!

Here is a link to the ross-tech site which gives the way of determining whether you have Immobiliser 2 or 3.

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Immobilizer 2 ECU Swapping

If you split the bottom part of your existing flipkey from the top, you will find the item code of your existing remote.

From memory the 434mhz sounds correct.

If you have the immobiliser code (this is supplied on a plastic strip with the immobiliser code printed on it under a scratch off patch) someone locally with VAG-com can code the key to the immobiliser for you.

cool thanks Dougal

one final question to clarify, does the fob need to be new?

i have found a 3 button fob from another 2002 octavia, so obviously i need to change the key for a blank one and have it cut to fit my car, but can i re-program the immobiliser chip from his car to mine? or does it HAVE to be a brand new, previously unused immobiliser part?

would a key with this code work:

HLO 130 959 753 AG 3-button fob

As I do not know the difference! its from a 2002 octavia elegance, so it must work with mine surely? mine is a 2002 octavia L&K with a 2-button fob at the moment with code: HLO 1J0 959 753 AG (i opened it up to check).

East Fortune Sunday Market, take your car and keys.

There's a guy there who should be able to help you.

"Keyfast Key Diagnostics"

Phone him on 07791 221319 & check if he'll be there tomorrow if you are interested ?

Or email him [email protected]

This is the same guy: http://www.keydiagnostics.co.uk/ in case you are worried about dealing with a market trader, he (or his webmaster) can't spell but he is legit ! :D

Don't now what immo type that code relates to.

Speak to the guy at the address I gave you.

You are going to need the SKC (Secret Key Code) to enable a new key to be programmed, this is usually supplied on a wee plastic fob with the keys when the car was supplied new.

Without this code programming a key will not be possible.

However, on older vehicles it is sometimes possible to obtain this code using specialist software and interrogating the dash pod. I have done this for SWMBO's Fabia using Vagtacho and thereafter using different software called Vagcom with the code it was possible to recode a new key to the car.

Although I have the software to obtain some SKC's and reprogramme keys I'm afraid I'm not prepared to attempt this on anyone else's cars as there is the possibility of permanently immobilising the vehicle and that's a risk I'm not prepared to take with any vehicle but my own.

The contact I gave you knows his stuff & I recently bought a cut key blade & key transponder (tiny glass tube) from him which I successfully recoded to SWMBO's Fabia.

If you have the SKC, take it with you if you decide to use this contact, if not he still MAY be able to help you.

Good luck ! :)

I managed to find a local lock smith with a key code reader and he cut a blank key and programmed the chip with the data from my working key and it worked ok.

When i contacted Skoda they wanted £55 for the key and £25 to program it to the car. The guy that cloned my key charged £25 .

Forgot to mention that the dealer said they would need my SKC Security code which the previous keeper never passed on and wanted another £80 to get this code as these codes are stored on a log in database in germany!.

The guy that cloned my key didnt need the SKC code as he just copied all the data from my only working key to the blank key.

If you dont have the SKC Code then maybe worth doing it this way.

well i found the correct fob code on ebay, and getting a blank key top half off ebay too, so will just get it cut and then the dealer said they will program the new key to the immobiliser for £40 (will try to haggle that yet) so will be about £75 all in. The dealer wanted £140 for the same thing.
