Hi, i wonder if anyone can give me some guidance. There's a 51 plate with 150k on the clock i can buy. I think about the mileage being to high, are the engines reliable?

Have a look in the for sale section of the forum, as I have just put mine up for sale with under half that mileage.

Any car that has a full service history should be OK :)

maybe consider a 4x4 as they are a good bit cheaper... same engine as the vrs just a lower tune 150 v 180 but the 4 wheel drive is incredible

In what sense? I don't break traction on my 2wd 1.8t, was out in a Audi TT 180hp quattro and didn't break traction on that either (naturally) but it did understeer and slide out on roundabouts just as much. To be fair, A-B I can't really see how it would be any quicker, unless someone is dumping the clutch and purposly messing up a racing start on the 2wd.

The 4wd did feel 'heavier' on the drive train and knock the mpg though. However I know the Audi is slightly different system.

Too high for what? For a £300 car it's low. But if the car is £10,000 it's way high. It's all about value for money in this life, nothing else.

Engines are generally good, yes it will need things doing so ensure it's cheap enough. Failure is possible, but unlikely, just like on a 30k example. Clutch/breather/egr/turbo is more likely though, so if very worried or it's not cheap enough perhaps purchase a fully comp warranty, or pay a lot more for a lower miles model and hope you made the right choice (any engine can blow).

Aside from the odd one dropping valves, it seems to be fixable niggles and generally a solid engine.

Its a tricky one. I would personally be put off by that sort of mileage on a vRS but on something like a 1.8T L&K I would see it as less of an issue due to the type of usage the car is likely to have had over its life.

I would have no problem with that mileage, as long as the car has a full history. Having owned 3 cars in the past with more mileage on them with no problems.
