To Rain X or not to Rain X?

Featured Replies

I have bought a RainX 'triple' pack from Costco...looks a bargain at £6.99+vat...it's a bottle of window cleaner/rain x & 2 x anti fog wipes.

Anyone use this stuff & any good? I recall using Rain X years ago & wasn't too impressed (I am thinking/hoping it will have moved on since then!) I also have issues with windows steaming/fogging up, so hope the wipes will do the trick.

Gave the Vrs a good clean today, treated the wheels to a 'wonder wheels' clean & if the rain hadn't come on would have polished it & probably used the Rain X too.

Still think the Race Blue is an unbeatable colour when it's clean & the sun is shining, but it doesn't half look crap (like everything else) when it's dirty!

I too tried it years ago and didn't like it.

I tried it again more recently and think it's improved (it said it was a revised product on the bottle).

I think it's important to clean the glass (and wipers) carefully before you apply the rain-x or it tends not to work so well in my experience.

My criticism is that it doesn't last very well. I've heard Aquapel and the like last much longer... But then the rain-x bottle will last you for years, so if you're happy to re-apply it every couple of months then it should be fine.

I certainly think it's worth using.

Don't go near the stuff, I had to spend hours a few years back try to get off my old car window, made the wipers judder very very badly... In the end meth got rid of dam stuff.

That was the problem I had with it first time around aswell :thumbdwn:

I've got mixed feelings. At speed it works and you have to use the wipers less, but slower (when you need wipers), it doesn't work, and makes the wipers less effective, IMO.

Aqualpel the side windows and mirrors but FFS don't do the windscreen. The stuff is still working on the sides after 6 months.

I used some Rain-X on the screen once and the wipers juddered to feck.

^My experience exactly with the Turtle Wax product. Good stuff, otherwise. Luckily it cleans off easily with alcohol.

edit: One post above the previous poster, that is.

Maybe not the bargain i though then...where's that Costco receipt for a refund !?

I agree with Dstev2000. I use RainX on the side windows only: works really well.

The windscreen has to be spotlessly clean for the stuff to work properly, even then wiper judder became really annoying within a month. Eventually spent a whole Saturday just cleaning the stuff off the w'screen.

Would never use it on the windscreen again.

Mine don't judder, but the hazing after the wipers do a pass is a bit annoying as it hasn't been there before.

Brilliant for the side windows, though.

Got some experience on using similar products on side windows and mirrors. Good for those but I would let the wipers to keep the windshield clear.

Good for boat windows too.

Always wondered whether its used on boats more, looks like they use something similar on the boats in 'Deadliest Catch'. The water seriously lashes the windows in the Bering Sea.

ok...so if I use it on the side windows only, is there an issue with cross contamination when I 'chamois' my car down after a wash? ( I use the same one for the whole car )

What about these anti-fog wipes, anyone used them?

I've never had any contamination issues with Aquapel or Rain-X

Can't comment on the anti fog wipes i'm afraid, i've always relied on the glass just being nice and clean all the times.

I use Rain-x on my MkII Octy. Works well on side windows, mirrors, and rear screen. Avoided the windscreen for a while after all the juddering stories - but eventually tried it and it works ok on mine thus far. I've applied a few coats though to get it just right.

Each to their own - but i think it works a treat.

I've heard of a few people having problems with the rain sensor with any additive on the windscreen so that's something else to think about.

Also, unless your wheels are fecked, I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR wonder wheels as a cleaner!!! If you haven't cleaned them regularly and they're covered in ground on brake dust, then it's a possibility, but it's HARSH stuff and is more likely to damage them over time. You're better off taking the wheels off individually and clay barring them to get rid of the black stuff instead. Very gentle in comparison and much better for the wheel lacquer.

Wonder wheels is the stuff of satan!!

What about these anti-fog wipes, anyone used them?

Not used the wipes, but i have a bottle of 'fog-x' in the garage that i used to use, and found that to be good. Didnt put it on my last car as it seemed not to mist at all but will definitely be putting it on the Octavia when i get a moment as i find it very bad for misting all round.

i found when i clean the front windscreen with AG glass cleaner it does a good job at beading the water off. just my 2 pence worth.

Yeah, AG Fast Glass is pretty good stuff for a lot of things. My top tip is that it gets rid of the white stains left by polish on black plastic trim, bumpers, etc. cos of it's solvent content.

Personally I have never had a problem with Rain X on the windscreen.

I used to be a Rain-X fan (for my windscreen as well as all the other windows), but got sick of re-applying it so often. It goes quite slimy when it is wearing off, particularly in cold weather. I've been using Aquapel for several months now, and am very happy with it so far (mind you, we are in the middle of a drought here in Oz, so I hardly ever drive in the rain, so not much of a test so far).

If I need to get everything off a window I use Amway metal polish. Applied wet and rinsed well it gets glass really squeaky clean without any scratches.

RAIN X - DEVILS OWN INVENTION -OK when first done -month or so later - oily screen - poor visibility ---and then getting it off -.Don't go down that road - fill you'rebottle with an anti freeze solution ,and add CLEARALEX ---My advice is to use twice the recommended dose .One squirt of wash gets rid of all known screen problems .

Use isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol is a top notch solvent for everything you can think of, and isopropyl is technical grade, leaves no residue upon evaporation.

You can also use it to clean the interior of the glass to keep it from misting. I find the anti fog sprays also quite effective, but they do leave behind a bit of a slimy coating cause of the glycerin.

Again, great for the back windows where misting occurs more often anyway.

Personally never used Rain-X but have previously used Rain Wizard and presently Mer RainAway.

Great used on side and rear windows, lasts for ages and reduces frost build up when its cold. On the windscreen used regularly, about every three months, I find it excellent and cost effective.

Have a look at this recent comparison test for different products;- Rain repellant test | Products | Auto Express

Juddery wipers? Have you checked to see if the blades are still 'good' and haven't degraded over time (often the cause).

Used Rain-X once a Passat windscreen. Tried everything to get rid of it because of smearing and wiper juddering. At night it was a nightmare (sorry!) - in desperation I had the screen changed. Don't even think about this stuff!
