Electrical mods

Featured Replies

Hi there folks.

Just thought I would share the electrical "mods" I have done to nelly.

First of all is the automatic headlights added ages ago

Second sidelight switch on dash to de-activate auto lights

Coming home lights (lights come on when doors unlocked and it is dark)

Anti-hijack (doors lock with release of handbrake and just working on un-lock with ignition off)

Ugraded horn to nautilus compact air horn

So anyone done any electrical tinkering on their car do add functions like this?

Phil

a nautilus compact air horn!!!

sounds fun! :D

Is remote central locking easy to fit if you already have central locking on the car?

So far...

Aftermarket central locking, the kit's only £22 from maplins so cheaper than anything on ebay when postage is taken into account. The appropriate holes to screw the brackets for the motors are already in the doors so no drilling required. Just two front doors working as never have passengers in the back, and when I tried the driver's door motor stopped working so just disconnected it.

Clifford arrow 5 alarm (there's better choices around than this for a similar price [but it's what I bought at the time], the Viper 1002 looks pretty cool on features.) Adding an alarm is one way of getting remote central locking. In the case of my aftermarket central locking it's just a lock and unlock wire that needs to be connected. It has a feature which lets you have the doors lock and unlock with the ignition.

Planning to get a nut welded in for my tailgate gas strut (so it will keep itself open), and then hoping to wire in the boot light properly, and also add one the other side (easy to do on the favorit estate as the lights just sit in the side trim things). For some reason as standard the light is only wired to turn on when the sidelights are switched on, which is a bit peculiar.

Been thinking about driving lamps and daytime running lights

Nautilus air horn would be cool :D

Yes the Nautilus air horn is VERY cool!

Not that much bigger than a standard horn (and is mounted in place of the original one) and VERY loud.. makes quite a few people jump when being used!

Needs wiring in on a relay though as I tried with just the original wires and it didn't work as well as it started off quiet and gradually got louder... put it this way... the headlights dim when I press the horn now!

Remote locking as said above is easiest achieved through installing an alarm although you can buy kits specifically for making it remote locking. Mine already had remote locking as standard so no problems there.

Also working on directional fog lights (the corresponding fog light comes on when the headlights are on and I indicate!)

I think that would be illegal, unless it only worked on main beam, when I believe Mercedes have done it as OEM.

I was wondering, but then again I think this is a feature on many modern cars, including the brand new Superb. But I guess if officer dibble takes offence then it's a fixed penalty notice.

I've seen this working on dipped beam on loads of cars and have driven a Taureg with just the dipped beam switched on and the feature still worked.

It would just work when the dipped and/or main beam is on and not with the sidelights.

the only simple electrical mods i've done to mine is wire up an aftermarket fuel injection system

Yes... Very "simple"! lol

Just another addition added to mine last night... some rear lights fitted in the grab handles... they came out of a VW sharan/ford galaxy from ebay:

Now thats a neat mod

how did you run the wires through the roof for them?

Was a case of removing the front sun visors and the grab handles on the roof and just fed the wire through as it was fairly stiff speaker wire.

I soldered the a wire inside the original light fitting that just gets it power from the main bulb feed.

Took about 30 mins in total in cluding soldering etc.

i think it's a really nice mod, how did you attach the light units to the headlining??

Just cut some holes for them and then they just clip them selves in!

I like the rear lamps look classy. Will be doing this to mine, also want to make my rear wiper intermitant its just on while holding the switch or off when let go or gives 3 wipes when washer used, i believe the the later fellys had this as standard, suprised my L&K doesn't:( Also need to sort alarm/remote locking out, central lock works but thats it. Quick ? is the central lock supposed to work on the boot lock or are they all manual lock and use the lever inside?:)
