Felicia Rust-proofing / treatment

Featured Replies

Hello.

Just got a new exsorst fitted after the old one started to look like swiss cheese. My question is this: is there anything u can put on the exhaust to deter rust forming, and prolong its life?

ive used an old fashioned looking product called "waxyol" for the other bits and bobs under the car

(brake pipes, wishbones, mounting points/bolts, and gear linkage)

this is ment to sort out rusty bits, and stop more rust appearing !!!

but i think its a BAD idea to go putting this on the exhaust ....

No there isnt.

Exhausts can last a long time depending on your mileage or what kind of driving you do.

mainly short journeys mean the acidic gases build up more as the engine isnt fully warm so will eat your exhaust components more quickly.

Waxoyling other components will mean you wont have to replace them. Brake pipes tend to be corroded. I have mine greased to prolong their life.

Just had a new exhaust fitted on my Skoda.

i hade a new centre section and backbox fitted for £114 inc labour and VAT ... this seemed like a good price to me, how much was yours ?

Definitely, it will stink, will burn off when hot and in the worst case scenario will catch fire.

I paid £40 for a centre box and a rear box would have been £35 in total including vat and labour. They're non-oe parts though and that's the cheapest possible place I could find.

My understanding is exhausts tend to rust inside -> out. So if you don't use the car regularly you get water settling in the exhaust which helps it rust. So best preventative measure I can think of is to drive it regularly :)

ummmm i doubt that stuff would work much better ... i imagine the manifold would be about 300 degrees, and the rest of the exhaust around 200, and the backbox 100 ish

so that stuff would probably burn off!

--> girls wont like this .... smokey burning exhaust will do nothing to woo the ladies.

From what I've read in some other forums, this is probably the best waxoyl type stuff you can buy Bilt-Hamber Laboratories - Corrosion Prevention: Dynax S50 The comparison names one product as "UK's leading anti-corrosion wax" which I would guess is waxoyl.

wow, according to that article i may as well have applied peanut butter to the rusty bits of my car!

this is if the "leading uk brand" is this waxyol stuff

New backbox, middlebox and fitting cost me £99

prices around here vary loads,

kwik-fit - £132.80

National - £147.70

one local garage was £160 - £170 !

and Nationwide autocare was £114 (i think these guys had a bad reputation a few years ago, but i had no problems)

Kwik Fit quoted me £160

I was at Kwik Fit and there was a Felicia 1.6 like mine having its' exhaust done there for the £160.

The owner was good to chat to, but he'll definatly always now get quoted from the Skoda garage before a "fast fit" place

I think it depends on the engine too.

It wont cost much more to have a custom stainless exhaust made up and fitted, and stainless should outlast the car. You dont have to all out max power style with 6" bore with dustbin cans and lights that flash to yo toones. Most of them do sensible stuff too

£85 fitted from Exhaust Systems Ltd in Gateshead 2 years ago. Will be about £90-£95 now.

Yeah, the only way of reducing corrrosion on an exhaust system is called "stainless steel".
